In 1967, Formell became musical director of Elio Reve's charanga orchestra. He reformatted the group into Changui '68, and then founded his own group, Los Van Van, on December 4, 1969.
Musical style
Using a charanga line-up as its base, Van Van added trombones and vocals, and was the first Cuban group to use synthesizers and drum machines. Their sound was a fusion of changui and son montuno with various types of music, including Afro-Cuban rhythms, rock, funk, disco, and hip hop. Juan Formell contributed countless innovations to the Cuban bass and clave, which paved the way for a radical reconceptualisation of rhythmic arrangements in Cuban music. The Van Van sound came to be known as songo (based on the songo rhythm), which laid the base for the later development of timba.
Notable personnel
Los Van Van has been a school for outstanding singers and musicians. Past members with successful careers as solo artists include Pedro Calvo, Angel Bonne, Changuito, Cesar "Pupy" Pedroso and others. As of 2006, Los Van Van probably have the best lineup of singers for a Cuba band composed of; Mayito Rivera, Roberto Hernandez "Roberton", Yeni Valdes and Lele Rosales.

Una historia verdadera
Una amiga me lo conto'
Que a ella le sucedio'
Vino a verla una vecina
Muy triste, muy afligida
Hondamente compungida
El que contaba la sandunguera
El que tenia titimania
Ese mismito se dio' candela
Candela, ni loco!
Y yo vestido muy elegante
Fui a visitar a mi amigo
Y del susto que se dio'
Fue' a parar a la cocina
Mira negro
Tu eres un fantasma
Por que te diste candela
Lo dice la habana entera
Tremendo fue el comentario
Y sin pensarlo me acerco a ella
Ven y tocame, pa' que veas
Que todavia doy mucha guerra
Coro
Entonces, el negro no tiene na'
Caballero entonces
Coro
Eh? que te pasa tu?
Coro
Eh? que te pasa tu?
El negro no tiene na', caballero
The song "El Negro No Tiene Ná" by Los Van Van tells a story that was once told to the singer by a friend. It is about a neighbor who visits this friend in a state of deep sadness and emotional distress. She reveals that her friend, who was known for being a skilled dancer and a charismatic personality, had suffered a terrible accident. He had set himself on fire after getting into an argument with someone who had insulted him. The incident had not only left him severely injured but had brought shame and humiliation to his reputation.
Later, the singer goes to visit the injured friend, who had dressed up and was sitting in the kitchen. The singer reminds him that his mishap had become the talk of the town, but despite that, he tries to lift his friend's spirits by telling him that he is still a formidable force and that people should not underestimate him. The phrase "El Negro No Tiene Ná," which means "The black man has nothing," is used ironically to demonstrate that the singer still has his dignity and pride, and his skills are intact despite the terrible incident.
The song's lyrics and upbeat tune are typical of Los Van Van's music, which is a mix of Cuban genres such as salsa, son, and rumba. The song was first released in 1974 and became a huge hit in Cuba and abroad. Interestingly, "El Negro No Tiene Ná" became a controversial song as some interpreted the use of the word "negro" (black) as offensive, but others argued that Los Van Van were simply reclaiming the word and using it as a term of endearment.
