Many of the Lost Dogs albums include at least one or two cover songs. Songs covered by the Lost Dogs include Bob Dylan's "Lord, Protect My Child," Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will," The Beatles' "I'm A Loser," and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More." They have also recorded a number of Traditional or Gospel standards such as "Dust On The Bible," and "Farther Along."
In March, 2000, shortly after the release of their Gift Horse album, Gene Eugene died in his sleep at The Green Room, his recording studio in Huntington Beach, California.
2003 saw the release of the band's first DVD, Via Chicago, a black and white concert film released by Lo-Fidelity Records. A follow-up DVD, Via Chicago (All We Left Unsaid), containing additional songs from the concert, was released in 2006.
Although the loss of Eugene is noticeable, the remaining three Lost Dogs members continue to tour and record new albums. In 2004, the band got together with longtime friend Steve Hindalong to produce a special album for their summer tour. The result was entitled Mutt, and included new acoustic versions of nine songs originally written and recorded for each band member's regular rock bands, with one new song. The following year, the band would release one of their most unusual recordings to date, the almost entirely instrumental Island Dreams.
The band's most recent project, Old Angel, was released May 2010. The band — including the newest official "dog," drummer Steve Hindalong — once again hit the road for a national tour in support of their new album.

Lost Dogs Lyrics

Long time ago, the form of God was knocking at our door
And in the sky, fire
Eleanor, it's raining now
We walked a thin wire
Eleanor, it's raining now
Long time ago, we named the world and watched it break in two
In the folds of the dress on the chair, I can see your face
I am the cross and the nail you bear
You are my curse and my saving grace
Long time ago, God whispered words and names we can't recall
Long time ago, we hid our shame outside the garden wall
And it's a cruel winter
Eleanor, it's raining now
On the last sinner
Eleanor, it's raining now
The lyrics in the song "It" by Lost Dogs are highly metaphorical and cryptic, requiring closer attention to detail to fully understand their significance. The song appears to talk about a relationship that has ended, with the "you" in the song having left "a track of flame" a long time ago. Despite the distance, both individuals still feel their connection, which is depicted by the form of God knocking on their door.
The lyrics then shift to the sky describing "fire" and "rain," as though the natural elements are reflecting the inner turmoil of the individuals. The song talks about naming the world and watching it break in two, symbolizing how old constructs and ideas that once held them together have now fallen apart. The singer sees the face of the person who left in the folds of the dress on the chair, which reminds him/her of the love and pain that person brought.
The lyrics then mention God whispering words and names that they can't recall, indicating a sense of loss or disconnection from their faith. They also hid their shame outside the garden wall, reminiscent of the biblical story of Adam and Eve. The song concludes with the coming of a "cruel winter" on the "last sinner," which may be a metaphor for the end of the world or the end of their relationship.
