Many of the Lost Dogs albums include at least one or two cover songs. Songs covered by the Lost Dogs include Bob Dylan's "Lord, Protect My Child," Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will," The Beatles' "I'm A Loser," and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More." They have also recorded a number of Traditional or Gospel standards such as "Dust On The Bible," and "Farther Along."
In March, 2000, shortly after the release of their Gift Horse album, Gene Eugene died in his sleep at The Green Room, his recording studio in Huntington Beach, California.
2003 saw the release of the band's first DVD, Via Chicago, a black and white concert film released by Lo-Fidelity Records. A follow-up DVD, Via Chicago (All We Left Unsaid), containing additional songs from the concert, was released in 2006.
Although the loss of Eugene is noticeable, the remaining three Lost Dogs members continue to tour and record new albums. In 2004, the band got together with longtime friend Steve Hindalong to produce a special album for their summer tour. The result was entitled Mutt, and included new acoustic versions of nine songs originally written and recorded for each band member's regular rock bands, with one new song. The following year, the band would release one of their most unusual recordings to date, the almost entirely instrumental Island Dreams.
The band's most recent project, Old Angel, was released May 2010. The band — including the newest official "dog," drummer Steve Hindalong — once again hit the road for a national tour in support of their new album.
Jesus Loves You Brian Wilson

Well, I was just a kid
And you sang "doo-wah doo-wah"
Every note from you was
Like a letter from home
When you went "doo-wah, doo-wah"
But for too many years
It's been sounding pretty weird
It made me feel so bad
I had to find out what happened
To your "doo-wah, doo-wah"
I paid the price and leafed
Through every book that I could find
About your "doo-wah doo-wah"
I found a soul on ice
A broken heart a broken mind
Trying to "doo-wah doo-wah"
Felt helpless when I knew
That you weren't in control
Of your "doo-wah, doo-wah"
But there's a guy I know
And he's waiting here to
Help you with your "doo-wah, doo-wah"
Oh won't you pray
(Jesus loves you Brian Wilson)
That's what I say
(Jesus loves you Brian Wilson)
You're a crazy man
(Jesus loves you Brian Wilson)
He understands
(Jesus loves you Brian Wilson)
Come on and pray
You've nothing to lose
And everything to gain
You're already insane
He's right there to love you
He's so proud of you
You know that he'll place
No one above you
His love's gonna heal you
'Cause he made the real you
No way he could steal from you
Reach out and you'll feel it too
The song "Jesus Loves You Brian Wilson" by the Lost Dogs is an ode to the legendary Beach Boys' frontman, Brian Wilson, who was known for his distinct vocal style, particularly his signature "doo-wah doo-wah" scat singing. The song begins with the singer reminiscing about the first time he heard Wilson's voice and how it resonated with him on a personal level. However, as the years went by, the singer became concerned about Wilson's well-being and delved into researching his life, only to discover the troubled soul behind the voice.
Wilson suffered from mental health issues and struggled with substance abuse, which caused a rapid decline in his music career, leading to a period of seclusion and an overall instability in his personal life. The song's chorus delivers a message of hope and encouragement, urging Wilson to turn to Jesus Christ for help in his time of need. The singer acknowledges that Wilson's struggles were beyond his control, but offers love and support as a fellow human being.
Overall, "Jesus Loves You Brian Wilson" is a poignant reminder of how music can have a profound impact on people's lives and how even the most talented artists can suffer from inner turmoil. The song offers a message of hope and faith, encouraging listeners to seek help during their darkest moments and trust in a higher power's love and healing.
