Many of the Lost Dogs albums include at least one or two cover songs. Songs covered by the Lost Dogs include Bob Dylan's "Lord, Protect My Child," Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will," The Beatles' "I'm A Loser," and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More." They have also recorded a number of Traditional or Gospel standards such as "Dust On The Bible," and "Farther Along."
In March, 2000, shortly after the release of their Gift Horse album, Gene Eugene died in his sleep at The Green Room, his recording studio in Huntington Beach, California.
2003 saw the release of the band's first DVD, Via Chicago, a black and white concert film released by Lo-Fidelity Records. A follow-up DVD, Via Chicago (All We Left Unsaid), containing additional songs from the concert, was released in 2006.
Although the loss of Eugene is noticeable, the remaining three Lost Dogs members continue to tour and record new albums. In 2004, the band got together with longtime friend Steve Hindalong to produce a special album for their summer tour. The result was entitled Mutt, and included new acoustic versions of nine songs originally written and recorded for each band member's regular rock bands, with one new song. The following year, the band would release one of their most unusual recordings to date, the almost entirely instrumental Island Dreams.
The band's most recent project, Old Angel, was released May 2010. The band — including the newest official "dog," drummer Steve Hindalong — once again hit the road for a national tour in support of their new album.
Waiting For You To Come Around

We never feared
We were so close
We were so dear
Who could have thought how far we'd drift?
I'm trying to think of how that I can let you know how much you're missed
So if you need a friend
If you're gonna call
Any time at all is fine
And if you have some doubt about it
Forget about that now
I will wait for you to come around
We'd drive all night in that beat-up car
I'd watch the road
You'd watch the stars
Here's my bright idea
To write this note
So count this as the first move
Forgive the lump that's in my throat
You're not one to ask for kindness from a stranger
You've always been so lonely in a crowd
And I don't care if it's sooner or if it's later
You can find me waiting, waiting for you to come around
When times are tough, they make us cry
We've lost some friends, and we don't know why
Some pass away
Some grow apart
And though I haven't seen you lately, you still own my heart
The song "Waiting for You to Come Around" by the Lost Dogs is a melancholic reflection on a once-close friendship that drifted apart. The lyrics are bittersweet and reveal the singer's longing for his friend, whom he hasn't seen in a while. The opening lines capture the sense of loss and distance between the two friends. They were brave and dear to each other once but drifted apart unexpectedly, and the singer is now struggling to convey how much he misses his friend.
The song then takes the tone of an open invitation to his friend, offering a hand of friendship and support anytime, anywhere. The singer acknowledges the apprehension of his friend, saying if there are doubts, forget them, and know that he will wait for him to come around. The second verse provides a glimpse into the nature of their once-close friendship, which involved long drives on beat-up cars, sharing jokes, and simply enjoying each other's company. The singer would watch the road; his friend would watch the stars. Now, he writes a note to his friend, perhaps hoping to rekindle their friendship and forgive each other for the misunderstandings that may have caused the drift.
The final verses of the song express the universal human condition of losing friends and the pain that comes with it. The singer acknowledges that times are tough, and they make us cry, and we lose some friends without knowing why. However, even though he has not seen his friend lately, he still owns his heart, and he will always be waiting for him to come around.
