He soon gained fame due to the power and strength of his voice. The young tenor earned valuable experience and significant recognition while touring on the invitation of soprano Joan Sutherland, making his 1965 U.S. debut in Miami, Florida on her recommendation. His position was solidified in the years between 1966 and 1972, during which Pavarotti first appeared at Milan's seminal La Scala, at other major European houses, and, in 1968, at NYC's Metropolitan Opera. He received great acclaim, particularly working well with Joan Sutherland.
By the mid-70s, the tenor became known worldwide, famed for the brilliance and beauty of his tone, especially into the upper register. His "high C" became one of his trademarks. The late 70s and 80s saw Pavarotti making significant appearances in the world's opera houses and establishing himself as one of the great singers of the era.
Popular stardom came at the 1990 World Cup in Italy with the performances of "Nessun Dorma" (from Turandot) and as one of The Three Tenors in their famed first concert held on the eve of the final match of the tournament (repeated at later Cups). Pavarotti sang together with fellow star tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras and brought to the much wider audience hits previously confined to the opera world. Appearances in advertisements and with pop icons in concerts around the world furthered his influence. Pavarotti always maintained his identity as an opera star, unlike many crossover artists.
The later years brought a decline in ability to perform on stage due to a weight gain and lack of mobility. Pavarotti's final appearance in an opera was at the Met in March 2004. The 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy saw him performing for the last time. Pavarotti sang Nessun Dorma, with the crowd as its Chorus, and got a thunderous standing ovation. On September 6, 2007, he died at home in Modena from pancreatic cancer.

il mio sguardo l'incontro;
bella si che il mio cor,
ansioso a lei volo;
mi feri, m'invaghi
quell' angelica belta,
sculta in cor dall'amor
cancellarsi non potra:
palpitar con lei d'amor,
puo sopir il martir
che m'affana e stranzia il cor.
M'appari tutt'amor,
il mio sguardo l'incontro;
bella si cheil mio cor
ansioso a lei volo;
Marta, Marta tu sparisti
e il mio corcol tuo n'ando!
Tu la pace mi rapisti,
di dolor io moriro.
The lyrics of "M'appari tutt' amor" in Flotow's "Martha" speak of the singer's infatuation with a woman named Martha. The singer sings of how his gaze met hers and how he was immediately struck by her beauty. He describes her as an angelic beauty that has captivated his heart and soul, causing him to long for her. He believes that the mere thought of being with her could ease the pain and anguish he feels because of his unrequited love for her. However, she has disappeared and taken his peace of mind with her, leaving him to suffer in agony.
The emotions and sentiments expressed in this song are typical of the Romantic period. The song's soaring melodies and lush orchestration reflect the genre's emphasis on emotional expression, which emphasizes passionate love and intense longing. The song's lyrics and musical arrangement capture the essence of the singer's innermost desires and feelings, providing a glimpse into the complexities of human emotions.

M'appari tutt' amor,
I see in you all the love I have been searching for,
il mio sguardo l'incontro;
meeting my eyes with yours
bella si che il mio cor,
So beautiful that my heart
ansioso a lei volo;
flies to you eagerly;
mi feri, m'invaghi
You wound me, you charm me,
quell' angelica belta,
That angelic beauty,
sculta in cor dall'amor
carved into my heart by love,
cancellarsi non potra:
cannot be erased;
il pensier di poter
the thought that I could
palpitar con lei d'amor,
beat with love for you,
puo sopir il martir
can soothe the agony
che m'affana e stranzia il cor.
that torments and constricts my heart.
Marta, Marta tu sparisti
Martha, Martha, you disappeared
e il mio cor col tuo n'ando!
and my heart went with you!
Tu la pace mi rapisti,
You stole my peace,
di dolor io moriro.
I will die of grief.

M'apparì tutto amore
Il mio sguardo l'incontro
Bella sì che il mio cor
Ansioso a lei volò
Mi ferì, m'invaghì
Quell'angelica beltà
Sculta in cor dall'amore
Cancellarsi non potrà
Il pensier di poter palpitare con lei d'amore
Può sopire il martire
Che m'affanna, e strazia il cor
E strazia il cor
M'appari tutto amore
Il mio sguardo l'incontro
Bella sì che il mio core
Ansioso a lei volò
Marta, Marta, tu sparisti
E il mio cor col tuo n'andò
E tu la pace mi rapisti
Di dolor io morirò
O di dolor morrò
Ah, sì, morrò
poetic, not literal translation:
She appeared to me, purest of love.
I discovered with my eyes this vision of delight.
Lovely was she, that my hungry heart,
In a snap, to her did fly;
I was hurt, I was charmed
By that beauty from above.
Love is etched in my heart,
And cannot now be erased.
The mere thought that our hearts
With sweet love might beat as one
Is enough to forget all the sorrow
That fills my heart.
She appeared to me, purest of love.
I discovered with my eyes this vision of delight.
Lovely was she, that my hungry heart,
In a snap to her did fly.
Marta, Marta, you have left me,
And my heart along with yours has vanished away!
You've taken away my peace,
I will surely die of pain.
