He soon gained fame due to the power and strength of his voice. The young tenor earned valuable experience and significant recognition while touring on the invitation of soprano Joan Sutherland, making his 1965 U.S. debut in Miami, Florida on her recommendation. His position was solidified in the years between 1966 and 1972, during which Pavarotti first appeared at Milan's seminal La Scala, at other major European houses, and, in 1968, at NYC's Metropolitan Opera. He received great acclaim, particularly working well with Joan Sutherland.
By the mid-70s, the tenor became known worldwide, famed for the brilliance and beauty of his tone, especially into the upper register. His "high C" became one of his trademarks. The late 70s and 80s saw Pavarotti making significant appearances in the world's opera houses and establishing himself as one of the great singers of the era.
Popular stardom came at the 1990 World Cup in Italy with the performances of "Nessun Dorma" (from Turandot) and as one of The Three Tenors in their famed first concert held on the eve of the final match of the tournament (repeated at later Cups). Pavarotti sang together with fellow star tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras and brought to the much wider audience hits previously confined to the opera world. Appearances in advertisements and with pop icons in concerts around the world furthered his influence. Pavarotti always maintained his identity as an opera star, unlike many crossover artists.
The later years brought a decline in ability to perform on stage due to a weight gain and lack of mobility. Pavarotti's final appearance in an opera was at the Met in March 2004. The 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy saw him performing for the last time. Pavarotti sang Nessun Dorma, with the crowd as its Chorus, and got a thunderous standing ovation. On September 6, 2007, he died at home in Modena from pancreatic cancer.

E d'ipocrita veste scudo facesti alla viltà
Fratello
Riconoscimi
Voi, vivente
Da un lustro ne vò in traccia
Ti trovo, ah ti trovo finalmente
Col sangue sol cancellasi
L'infamia ed il delitto
Ch'io ti punisca è scritto
Sul libro del destin
Tu prode fosti, or monaco
Un'arma qui non hai
Deggio il tuo sangue spargere
Scegli, due ne portai
Vissi nel mondo, intendo
Or queste vesti, l'eremo
Dicon che I falli ammendo
Che penitente è il cor
Lasciatemi, lasciatemi
Difendere quel sajo, né il deserto
Codardo, te non possono
Codardo tale asserto
No, no, assistimi, Signore
Le minaccie, I fieri accenti
Portin seco in preda I venti
Perdonatemi, pietà
O fratel, pietà, pietà
A che offendere cotanto
Chi fu solo sventurato?
Deh, chiniam la fronte al fato
O fratel, pietà, pietà
Tu contamini tal nome (o fratel, pietà, pietà)
(O fratel, pietà, pietà) Ah una suora mi lasciasti
Che tradita abbandonasti
All'infamia, al disonor
No, non fu disonorata
Ve lo giura un sacerdote
Sulla terra l'ho adorata
Come in cielo amar si puote
L'amo ancor, e s'ella m'ama
Più non brama questo cor
Non si placa il mio furore
Per mendace e vile accento
L'arme impugna, ed al cimento
Scendi meco, o traditor
Non si placa il mio furore
Per mendace e vile accento
L'arme impugna, ed al cimento
Scendi meco, o traditor
Se I rimorsi, il pianto omai
Non vi parlano per me
Qual nessun mi vide mai
Io mi prostro al vostro piè
Ah la macchia del tuo stemma
Or provasti con quest'atto
Desso splende più che gemma
Sangue il tinge di mulatto
Per la gola voi mentite
A me un brando
Un brando, uscite
Finalmente
No, l'inferno non trionfi
Va, riparti
Ti fai dunque di me scherno?
Va
S'ora meco misurarti
O vigliacco, non hai core
Ti consacro al disonore
Ah, segnasti la tua sorte
Morte
Morte
Ah, segnasti la tua sorte
Morte
Morte
A entrambi morte
Ah, vieni a morte, a morte andiam
The lyrics to Luciano Pavarotti's La Forza Del Destino (The Power of Destiny) depict a vengeful Alvaro seeking to avenge an alleged insult to his honor at the hands of his brother, Carlo. Alvaro accuses Carlo of hiding in a monastery, but a hatred for revenge has been festering in him. The only way to restore his honor is through spilling Carlo's blood. Carlo, now a monk, tries to convince his brother to show mercy, but Alvaro refuses and the two engage in a deadly duel to the death.
The longer translation of the lyrics reveals a complicated story filled with betrayal, regret, and ultimately, revenge. It speaks to the theme of the power of destiny and how it can influence, if not control, human actions.
Overall, the lyrics of La Forza Del Destino narrates a tale of two brothers caught up in a web of destiny, forced to face the consequences of their actions and the power of fate.

Invano Alvaro ti celasti al mondo
Alvaro, you tried to hide from the world in vain
E d'ipocrita veste scudo facesti alla viltà

The monestary where you hide revealed your location to me
L'odio e la sete di vendetta; alcuno
Hatred and the thirst for revenge; no one
