Born David Debrandon Brown, Lucky Daye is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised in a cult that forbade secular music, he nonetheless discovered an innate knack for singing. After his mother left the cult, Brown immersed himself in classic R&B and eventually fell particularly hard for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Rick James. Uprooted by Hurricane Katrina, he moved to Tyler, Texas, but soon relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue music. He established himself as a songwriter and background vocalist, and across 2008 and 2009, landed credits on material by Keith Sweat (a handful of cuts on Just Me) and Ne-Yo ("She Got Her Own"). Brown wasn't as active the next few years — he did write for Boyz II Men ("Believe Us") — though he shifted gear during the latter half of the 2010s. During 2016 and 2017, he co-wrote songs released by Keke Palmer ("Enemiez"), Ella Mai ("10,000 Hours," "Down"), Trey Songz ("Song Goes Off"), and Mary J. Blige (including two tracks off Strength of a Woman), among other contemporary R&B artists. Signed as a recording artist to the RCA-supported Keep Cool label, Brown — by then living in Los Angeles — made his debut as Lucky Daye in 2018. First was "Little More Time," a Victoria Monet collaboration included on the soundtrack for Insecure's third season. Next came the single "Roll Some Mo," followed shortly thereafter by I, the song's parent EP. These six cuts, all written with and produced by D'Mile, prompted comparisons to Frank Ocean but also fell somewhere between comparatively soul-rooted progressives BJ the Chicago Kid and Daniel Caesar. ~ Andy Kellman
Love You Too Much

Hm
Guess I got a lot of pride
So much pride I don't, I don't see myself gettin' hurt but
Guess it happens to everybody, hmm
Yeah, it feels the same
Yeah everyday
Ha it's funny how pain work
And no matter how bad you wanna get out of it
The next person gotta deal with it
Fucking my head up
Hm
And you wanna
Make me feel, what you feel, hm
Like I hurt you that bad
Alright good luck, we ain't the same
But I'm the one to blame
I've been dealin' with the pressure
Way too much to even measure
Try to keep it all in
But you got me open, hopeless for you
Ooh oh
Hopeless for you, ay
Ooh oh
I can't afford those losses
That's just my ego talkin'
You make heart beat for you
I almost cry to often (too often)
But I put too much in your hands
So much regret in the end
It's a shame for you, it's a shame for me
Is the blame on you? I can say the same for me
After the wrong is there a right?
How can I look into your eyes?
This is a truth that I can't fight
I love you too much (ohh oh)
I love you too much (ohh oh)
It's a shame for you (ohh oh), it's a shame for me (ohh) (ay)
Gotta be careful, I know, I know
You and me can't be nothing no more
I've been lookin' for something from you
I've been gettin' nothing at all
You're such a fuckin' woman (woman)
But deserves the fuckin' world, yeah
I can't afford those losses
That's just my ego talkin'
You make heart beat for you
I almost cry to often (too often)
But I put too much in your hands
So much regret in the end
It's a shame for you, it's a shame for me
Is the blame on you? I can say the same for me
After the wrong is there a right?
How can I look into your eyes?
This is a truth that I can't fight
I love you too much (ohh oh)
I love you too much (ohh oh)
It's a shame for you (ohh oh)
It's a shame for me (ohh, ay) (I love you too much)
They say love is blind, that's some real shit
Woke up from a lie to the truth
How you fuckin' lie with a straight face?
How can you and I find a safe place?
We was in our zone, now you makin' sudden moves
I wish I could get to you, you know
It's hard way to love with no
Hard way to love
With no, trust
That's just my ego talkin'
You make heart beat for you
I almost cry to often (too often) (ohh)
But I put too much in your hands (your hands)
So much regret in the end
It's a shame for you, it's a shame for me
Is the blame on you? I can say the same for me
After the wrong is there a right?
How can I look into your eyes?
This is a truth that I can't fight
I love you too much (ohh oh)
I love you too much (ohh oh)
It's a shame for you (ohh oh)
It's a shame for me (ohh, ay)
(I love you too much) (ohh oh)
(Ohh oh)
(Ohh oh)
In Lucky Daye's "Love You Too Much," the singer-songwriter laments a failed relationship and the painful aftermath of trying to move on. Despite realizing that both parties are to blame for the relationship's end, he can't help but feel as though he loved his partner too much. He acknowledges his ego's role in the situation, recognizing that while he puts his heart and trust in her hands, he is also scared of losing her. He also speaks about his inability to look into her eyes after the wrongdoing and his frustration at the unfaithful behavior that led to their break-up. He questions how they can find a safe place again and rekindle that trust they once had.
The lyrics are honest and raw, revealing the pain that comes with loving someone so deeply and not being able to make the relationship work. The song's somber tone and soulful instrumentation only add to the emotional weight of Lucky Daye's words. As he sings each line, he seems to be coming to terms with the reality of the relationship's end and the need to move forward, but the pain is still palpable.
Overall, "Love You Too Much" is a heartbreaking narrative about a relationship that couldn't withstand its own weight. Despite it all, Lucky Daye still holds on to the love he had for his partner and struggles to make sense of it all.
