Born David Debrandon Brown, Lucky Daye is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised in a cult that forbade secular music, he nonetheless discovered an innate knack for singing. After his mother left the cult, Brown immersed himself in classic R&B and eventually fell particularly hard for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Rick James. Uprooted by Hurricane Katrina, he moved to Tyler, Texas, but soon relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue music. He established himself as a songwriter and background vocalist, and across 2008 and 2009, landed credits on material by Keith Sweat (a handful of cuts on Just Me) and Ne-Yo ("She Got Her Own"). Brown wasn't as active the next few years — he did write for Boyz II Men ("Believe Us") — though he shifted gear during the latter half of the 2010s. During 2016 and 2017, he co-wrote songs released by Keke Palmer ("Enemiez"), Ella Mai ("10,000 Hours," "Down"), Trey Songz ("Song Goes Off"), and Mary J. Blige (including two tracks off Strength of a Woman), among other contemporary R&B artists. Signed as a recording artist to the RCA-supported Keep Cool label, Brown — by then living in Los Angeles — made his debut as Lucky Daye in 2018. First was "Little More Time," a Victoria Monet collaboration included on the soundtrack for Insecure's third season. Next came the single "Roll Some Mo," followed shortly thereafter by I, the song's parent EP. These six cuts, all written with and produced by D'Mile, prompted comparisons to Frank Ocean but also fell somewhere between comparatively soul-rooted progressives BJ the Chicago Kid and Daniel Caesar. ~ Andy Kellman

Maybe we're better misunderstood
I been tryna be clear in my feelings, girl
Maybe we're better misunderstood
I been overthinkin', we ain't really even gotta name this
We'd be so much better misunderstood (understood)
We'd be so much better misunderstood
I try to do it, I push 'em back anytime you come and see me
Is it mine, all mine, all I know it just feel right
Don't it feel right? Ayy, my thoughts
Doin' what they wanna
Got me thinkin' that I might can't have it like I want you, oh
You know I'm no good at reasons
Hold it back, I tried, it just get me deeper
We ain't gotta be all put together, girl
Maybe we're better misunderstood
I been tryna be clear in my feelings, girl
Maybe we're better misunderstood
I been overthinkin', we ain't really even gotta name this
We'd be so much better misunderstood (understood)
We'd be so much better misunderstood
You touch me and my whole mind just go blank
Try not to think, all my thoughts point your way
I'm missing you but I got no right
You're the only one I see, so much for open minds
Fightin' fuckin', fuckin' fightin'
That's the way we love it, damn, I love you
Playin' games just to get a reaction, pushin' buttons
You know I'm no good at reasons
Hold it back, I tried, it just get me deeper
We ain't gotta be all put together, girl
Maybe we're better misunderstood
I been tryna be clear in my feelings, girl
Maybe we're better misunderstood
I been overthinkin', we ain't really even gotta name this
We'd be so much better misunderstood
We'd be so much better misunderstood, oh
Maybe we're better misunderstood
Understood, oh, oh
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
The song "Misunderstood" by Lucky Daye is a reflection on a complex and turbulent relationship. The lyrics suggest that rather than trying to label or define their relationship, the two individuals would be better off embracing their feelings and the uncertainty that comes with them. The phrase "Maybe we're better misunderstood" is repeated throughout the song, implying that the singer believes their partnership is stronger when they don't try to force it into a specific mold or category.
In the chorus, the singer admits to overthinking and not being good at expressing their emotions in a clear way to their partner. This creates complications and tension in their relationship, which is reflected in lines like "Playin' games just to get a reaction, pushin' buttons." Overall, the song seems to be an exploration of the idea that sometimes relationships don't conform to society's expectations or our own preconceived notions, and that is okay.

Agreed!! Like even with artists that I have liked for years, certain songs I have to listen to 3 or 4 times to actually like. But as soon as I heard Roll Some Mo & Karma, ECSTASY! This one is good too.
