She is the elder sister of the singer Enya, who was also briefly a member of Clannad in the early 1980s.
Her music is usually classified as New Age or Celtic. She accepts the Celtic label, but has at times indicated a slight discomfort with being seen as "New Age" as much of her music is strongly Christian, with some of her songs showing additional influences from her Catholic upbringing.
Since 2002, she has promoted herself as Moya Brennan -- a spelling closely resembling the phonetic pronunciation of her name for those not familiar with the Irish variant of the spelling.
According to her official website, her early influences included the likes of Joni Mitchell and the Beach Boys, before she discovered "the extraordinary wealth of Celtic history and melody on her doorstep".
Moya is also a member of Irish vocal supergroup T with the Maggies.

Fan liom i gconai
Is gra geal mo chroi thu
Beith mise dilis
Is gra geal mo chroi thu
Tusa mo mhuirin
Is gra geal mo chroi thu
Fan ag mo thaobh sa
Beauty and grace with golden hair
Eyes like pearls
Came from the sea
Wherever you will go I will go
Wherever you will turn I'll follow so
Take me to the Land of Youth
Three hundred years
Is gra geal mo chroi thu
Fan liom i gconai
Is gra geal mo chroi thu
Beith mise dilis
Is gra geal mo chroi thu
Tusa mo mhuirin
Is gra geal mo chroi thu
Fan ag mo thaobh sa
Carried away on impulse
Followed my heart to the Land of Youth
Three hundred years and time stood still
Campanions calling
There's a warning
Three hundred years
Fallen to earth the thunder sound
Years overtake him
A grey old man
The lyrics of Máire Brennan's song Land of Youth tell the story of a lover who has found a kindred spirit. The singer addresses her lover with the phrase, "is gra geal mo chroi thu," which translates from Gaelic to "my heart loves you dearly." The singer expresses her love that her lover brings beauty and grace to her life and that she will remain faithful to him. She follows her heart to the Land of Youth, regardless of where it may take her.
The song also references the ancient Irish legend of Tir na nÓg, also known as the Land of Eternal Youth, which is a mystical place that is said to be located in the western sea. According to Irish mythology, time passes differently in the Land of Youth, and one could spend years there without aging. The singer is willing to follow her lover for three hundred years to this mystical place, time standing still as they exist in eternal youth.
