M.A.S.H. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Heaven ablaze in our eyes
We're standing still in time
The blood on our hands is the wine
We offer as sacrifice

Come on, and show them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul

This endless mercy mile
We're crawling side by side
With hell freezing over in our eyes
Gods kneel before our crime

Come on lets show, them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
Don't let go
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
For your soul

Come on, and show them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
Don't let go
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)

For your soul

Overall Meaning

The song "Wings of a Butterfly" by M.A.S.H. is a powerful ballad about devotion and sacrifice. The opening lines, "Heaven ablaze in our eyes, we're standing still in time," sets the tone for the entire song. The intense emotions of the lovers are conveyed through their eyes, as they stand still in this moment of time, transcending into something beyond human comprehension. The next line, "The blood on our hands is the wine we offer as a sacrifice," is a metaphorical reference to the pain and sacrifices that both lovers have endured to be together. They view their love as a sacrament that they offer to each other, symbolically expressing their love and devotion.

The chorus, "Come on, and show them your love. Rip out the wings of a butterfly for your soul, my love. Rip out the wings of a butterfly for your soul," is a metaphorical reference to the sacrifices that one is willing to make for love. The imagery in the lyrics is powerful, with the wings of a butterfly symbolizing something delicate and beautiful, yet something that can be easily destroyed. The idea of tearing away something so delicate and beautiful highlights the intensity of the lovers' feelings and their willingness to do whatever it takes to show their love and devotion. The repetition of the chorus adds to the emotional impact of the song.

The second verse continues with the theme of sacrifice, describing a journey of crawling side by side, facing adversity together. The lines "With hell freezing over in our eyes, gods kneel before our crime" suggest that the lovers are willing to face anything, even the wrath of the gods, to be together. They view their love as a crime, something that others may disapprove of, but they are willing to take the risk and endure the consequences.

Overall, "Wings of a Butterfly" by M.A.S.H. is a powerful ballad with intense emotions and is a beautiful expression of devotion and sacrifice.

Great video! Interesting stuff. One note on hot side aeration; I listened to the Brew Strong with Dr. Charlie Bamforth and he said that HSA probably doesn't effect homebrewers, and even in professional brewing HSA is something that shouldn't be given too much consideration. Your process works for you for other reasons though (splashing does suck!). Cheers!

Those stainless disconnects are nice. One day I'll replace my brass ones with stainless. Where did you get them?

JakeCpuNut

The mash out also halts conversion.. Lookin good!

Dan ABA

@PapiPaolo Ah, yes. However, if you ask John Palmer as of 2009, I think he'll tell you differently. In a nutshell if you have a good fermentation any effect of HSA will be cleaned up. Big breweries have to worry about it a little more due to their scale of splashing. Check out John Palmer and Jamil Zainasheff's interview with Dr. Charlie Bamforth (Brew Strong 01-26-2009). =)

@jmoney7728 I got them from several dot coms. At one point they were tough to get. Rebel Brewer, Home Brew Hardware, Home Brew Stuff. All these guys have good prices, check them out. Thanks for the comment.

@arrogantbastardale Touche! Great cast, thanks for turning me on to that. I will do what Dr. Bamforth said and "do the sensible thing". A silicone hose costs $1.20/foot, not mush of an investment for piece of mind. Pitch big and store cold, heard!

Van Malter

The point of a mash out it to stop beta amylase action to keep long chain sugars and more gravity/mouthfeel, nothing to do with flow.

Dirty Blond

Cold aide aeration?

Not a damn thing you can do prior to the boil to screw it up. You could literally take a crap in the mash tun, and after the boil all will be well.

Dont waste your time or suggest others waste theirs on silly, supid crap. Think it thru. So much crap slung around brewing I'm surprised people dont wear surgical gloves, mask, and booties, and have a scrub assistant help them prep.

Its freaking beer. If people did this thousands of years ago, before we knew what germs even were, dont think you need to worry so much about "cold side aeration"....

Lennie Richardson

I'm gonna try that.

PapiPaolo

@arrogantbastardale All do respect, Check out John Palmer's -6.9.3 Aeration is Good, Oxidation is Bad, in How to brew. Also see BYO's Help me Mr. Wizard article in May/June 2002 on HSA, "Some of the things commercial brewers are doing...Key pieces of equipment might also be introduced...New mixing paddles are low-shear, low-splash agitators that work well without baffles in the tank. These paddles minimize splashing during the stirred, heated steps of the mash. " -BYO mr. wizard May/June 2002.
