Good Guys
MIKA Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not the cowboys that are missing anymore
That problem was already old in ninety-four
Don't be offended, this might seem a little wrong
Where have all the gay guys gone?

And to the romance when I was fourteen years old
And to my heroes that were dressed up in gold
Only hoping one day I could be so bold
Where have all the gay guys gone?

If we are all in the gutter, it doesn't change who we are
'Cause some of us in the gutter are looking up at the stars
If we are all in the gutter, it doesn't change who we are
'Cause some of us in the gutter are looking up at the stars

So tell me
Where have all the good guys, where have all the good guys
Where have all the good guys gone?
Where have all the good guys, where have all the good guys
Where have all the good guys gone?

Thank you Rufus, thank you Auden and James Dean
Thank you Emerson and Bowie for my dreams
Wilfred Owen, Kinsey, Whitman and Rimbaud
Thank you Warhol, thank you patience, thank you Porter and Cocteau

If we are all in the gutter, it doesn't change who we are
'Cause some of us in the gutter are looking up at the stars
If we are all in the gutter, it doesn't change who we are
'Cause some of us in the gutter are looking up at the stars

So tell me
Where have all the good guys, where have all the good guys
Where have all the good guys gone?
Where have all the good guys, where have all the good guys
Where have all the good guys gone?

If we are all in the gutter, it doesn't change who we are
'Cause some of us in the gutter are looking up at the stars
If we are all in the gutter, it doesn't change who we are
'Cause some of us in the gutter are looking up at the stars

So tell me
Where have all the good guys, where have all the good guys
Where have all the good guys gone?
Where have all the good guys, where have all the good guys
Where have all the good guys gone?

It's not the cowboys that are missing anymore
That problem was already old in ninety-four

Don't be offended, this might seem a little wrong
Where have all the good guys gone?

Overall Meaning

Mika's "Good Guys" is a nostalgic ode to the icons of pop culture who helped him shape his identity as a young man. In the first verse, he recalls the shift in cultural representation of homosexuality from the era of cowboys being seen as the missing gay guys to it being normalized by the time he himself came of age in the post-AIDS era. He laments the disappearance of a certain kind of man portrayed in the media and their influence on him as a young gay man. In the chorus, he repeats the question, "Where have all the good guys gone?" as he remembers the artists who helped him dream bigger and be bolder.

Mika's lyrics are a commentary on the lack of mainstream visibility of queer men and their limited portrayals in media. He notes the impact this has on young queer people and their sense of self-worth. Despite the progress made in acceptance, he suggests that queer men are still facing adversity in finding their place in society. The song is an uplifting rallying cry for the good guys to come out of hiding and celebrate their unique contribution to the world.
