Prospects
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A train ride to Tuesday
A platform far away
Scarlet shades of evening
Move clouds of grey

Awaking arriving
The dirty station where
He passes crowds of people
Who don't see him there

Here's a desert island room
For a man who's cast away
Stranded in this home from home
From his family far away

Home, well this is it
This is it, is this my heart?
I miss you with all my heart
This is not, is this not my home?

One shoelace, cardboard suitcase
One passport from the Queen
One room for a light bulb
Where no one's been

Sticks and stones, my old bones
Not like 1954
Then they liked me fine
But not anymore

This empty room
Where he's marooned
With nothing left to say
But in the dark
He thinks of home far away

Home, well this is it
This is it, is this my heart?
I miss you with all my heart
This is not, is this not my home?

I feel cold getting old
More than the climate's change
Stranded on this island
The rate of exchange

Here's a desert island room
For a man who's cast-away
Today he will not be at work
There is no work anyway

How is it when you feel it?
Do you wonder what gets you down?

You're looking in the windows
When you walk this town

Overall Meaning

The song "Prospects" by Madness tells the story of a man who is on a train ride to an unknown destination, possibly his home or the place where he works. The opening of the song paints the picture of the evening sky with its scarlet shades as the train moves ahead. As the man arrives at the station, he is greeted by crowds of people who don't see him there, indicating a sense of detachment and loneliness.

The lyrics then take on a more somber tone as the man finds himself stranded in a deserted room, far away from his family. He is left with a cardboard suitcase, one shoelace, and a passport. This room is his isolation, and he feels that he is marooned with nothing left to say. The feeling of homesickness is intense, and he misses his loved ones with all his heart. Even as he wonders about his fate, he feels his heart growing colder with age.

The song is a poignant reflection of the human condition, where despite being surrounded by people, we can feel incredibly alone and lost. The sense of displacement and detachment that the song describes, along with the melancholy of being far away from home, is evocative, and the lyrics have a deep resonance that is both moving and thought-provoking.

Makes me think of the time when my friends little brother and I listened to this on my mothers old record player , then we went down to the river and tried to catch small fish...over 30 years now, it went so fast.

I like the way two band members children's names get worked into the first verse. Tuesday & Scarlet.
