Waltz Into Mischief
Madness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The latest and greatest amazing arrival
No conscience, no shame for the game of survival
Thieves and villains and fraudulent swindlers
Gathered in tribute with marks of respect

A big hand hooray
Oh, come all ye trustful
Let the band play
A waltz into mischief

The chairman is speaking, instructs the apprentice
All faces are turned to the wizard of sentence
Years of experience fall from his tongue
Like teardrops to puddles they ripple along

A big hand hooray
Oh, come all ye trustful
Let the band play
A waltz into mischief

This king of the cowboys holds fast his deception
Rides their misgivings to rapturous reception
Calls on the crowds of white painted heads
To check under carpets while we're in our beds

A big hand hooray
Oh, come all ye trustful
Let the band play
A waltz into mischief

A big hand hooray
Oh, come all ye trustful
Let the band play
A waltz into mischief

A big hand hooray
Oh, come all ye trustful

Let the band play
A waltz into mischief

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Madness's song "Waltz into Mischief" seem to be a commentary on the corrupt and deceptive nature of those in power, particularly in the world of business and politics. The first verse describes these individuals as "thieves and villains and fraudulent swindlers" who have no conscience or shame in their pursuit of survival. They are gathered together in some sort of celebration or tribute, and the crowd cheers them on as if they are heroes.

The second verse introduces the chairman, who is instructing his apprentice and who is revered as some sort of wizard or master. He speaks with years of experience on his tongue, but the metaphor of his words falling like teardrops to puddles implies that they may not be as valuable as they seem.

The third and final verse describes the "king of the cowboys," who seems to be the ultimate deceptive figure, simultaneously riding on the misgivings of the crowd while calling on them to root out hidden deceits. The repeated refrain throughout the song of "A waltz into mischief" suggests that all of these characters are performing some sort of dance, perhaps even enjoying the chaos they are creating.

Overall, the song seems to be a critique of the cult of personality and deceptive practices that often characterize those in positions of power, urging listeners to be wary of those who present themselves as heroes and instead advocate for transparency and honesty.

should have been replaced with the sun and the rain

SenhorBundy

I'd have put both on the album!

jcBurton2094

The Sun and the Rain may be a "better" song with more hit potential (Top 5 in the UK), but that doesn't mean that it fits in particularly well. It doesn't belong on the album... it was a non-album single from 1983

jcBurton2094

The Sun and The Rain and Wings of a Dove don't belong on this album... they were non-album singles that were put on the American version to try and sell more records over there
