1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

Reborn
Magnum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Did I do something or acted too soon?
The dogs they howl, the prisoners do cry
A king he is born but a poor man he will die
I believe if you look through your window
Try reaching out to the rainbow
You will find it was stolen by shadows
Time will tell if I did speak out of turn
Then I'll know it was a lesson well learned
I hear no sound, though I see before my eyes
A faceless wave in a desert I despise
I believe if you look through your window
Try reaching out to the rainbow
You will find it was stolen by shadows
But I know it's only for the moment
And the moment goes so fast
And the seconds of the future
Are the seconds of the past
'Cause it all goes in circles
And ends where it started
And the journey is familiar
Though you think it's uncharted
You could easily have been this way
A hundred times before
As another day passed, I secretly hide
All the funny feelings from deep down inside
Still I can but wonder how everyone knows
How they can believe in the thorn but no rose
Somebody ought to show them how to see
Somebody ought to tell them how to be free
I am a wheel that keeps turning
Cast out on a journey unending
This serves me well
Because I know I'm a seeker of fortune
None can explain or can foretell
Starlight on an ocean unbroken
Soft winds will refuse to be woken
All remains the same
And just like a silvery fountain
Comes from nowhere and back again
The opening lines of "Reborn" by Magnum introduce us to a narrator lost in thought, perhaps questioning the choices or actions that led them to their current situation. They wonder if they have acted too soon or if their situation is entirely out of their control. The imagery of howling dogs and crying prisoners adds to the overall loneliness and despair of the scene. The line "A king he is born but a poor man he will die" is a powerful statement about the fleeting nature of power and achievement. It speaks to the fact that no matter how much wealth or status we gain in life, we will all eventually meet the same fate.
The singer then reflects on the idea that if we search for something pure and beautiful, like a rainbow, we may find it has been obscured by darkness or shadows. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the struggles and hardships we face in life that can make it difficult to find joy or happiness. The line "But I know it's only for the moment" reminds us that whatever we are going through, it will eventually pass. The cyclical nature of life is also explored, with lines like "And it all goes in circles / And ends where it started." This again speaks to the theme of the impermanence of life and that everything is transient.
As the song progresses, the singer becomes more introspective, wondering if they have spoken out of turn or made mistakes. They acknowledge that they are on a journey, one that is uncertain but full of potential for discovery and growth. The idea of being a "seeker of fortune" is interesting, as it suggests that the singer is not purely seeking material wealth, but perhaps searching for deeper meaning and purpose in their life.
"Reborn" is a reflective and introspective song that explores themes of impermanence, seeking, and the cyclical nature of life. Through rich imagery and thoughtful lyrics, the song invites the listener to consider their own journey and the lessons they have learned along the way.
