María Isabel grew up in a musical family while living in Queens. She always knew she wanted to make music, citing powerful women such as Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, and Lauryn Hill as her biggest influences.
She studied in the music program at New York University while singing for the campus' a cappella group, APC Rhythm. Only during her first year at NYU did she start writing and recording her own songs, giving her a new outlet to express her thoughts and feelings. Soon after, she began to gain popularity through her Instagram and SoundCloud, where she would publish covers in addition to her own music.
After graduation, María Isabel moved to Los Angeles to further her career. In February 2020, she released her debut single “The 1,” followed by her debut EP Stuck In The Sky in October of the same year, which is based on the painful experience of a long-distance relationship.
(2) María Isabel López Rodríguez (b. 4 January 1995), known professionally as María Isabel, is a Spanish singer and songwriter. She is best known for winning the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2004 with the song "Antes muerta que sencilla". Winning at the age of nine years, ten months, and 16 days old, she became the youngest person to win the contest to date (a few days younger than the Tolmachevy Sisters, the only other nine-year-old winners).
Several weeks before winning the festival she released her first album, titled "¡No me toques las palmas que me conozco!". This CD included "Antes muerta que sencilla", which launched her career in the Spanish show business world, making her a competitor of another Spaniard child star, Melody.
Stuck in the Sky

My heart sinks when we're stuck in the sky
Not mine to keep, in love with memories
My heart breaks while we're stuck in the sky
Am I holdin' you down?
Or am I holdin' you back?
I guess it's one and the same
It's like we're floatin' on air
But we're not goin' nowhere
If you keep takin' your love from me
Fallin' so easy when you're in my reach
My heart sinks when we're stuck in the sky
Not mine to keep, in love with memories
My heart breaks while we're stuck in the sky
I don't know how many miles you're 'bout to put between us
Geography is complicated but I know the distance
From your collar bone to your waistline
I wanted to write "stay" on your left side
To match the tattoo on your right, we only love when stars align
It's in you that I confide, what happens when I can't find you?
What happens when I can't find you?
The lyrics to María Isabel's song "Stuck in the Sky" convey a sense of longing, uncertainty, and the complexities of love. The opening lines, "Falling so easy when you're in my reach, my heart sinks when we're stuck in the sky," suggest a feeling of being close to someone but also feeling trapped or unable to fully connect. The imagery of being stuck in the sky implies a sense of being suspended or unable to progress in the relationship.
The lyrics further explore the singer's feelings of insecurity and questioning their role in the relationship. The lines "Am I holding you down? Or am I holding you back? I guess it's one and the same, but we ain't got no one to blame" highlight the internal conflict and self-doubt that the singer is experiencing. They recognize that their presence may be inhibiting the other person's growth or freedom, and yet they also acknowledge that nobody is at fault for this situation.
The theme of distance is also present in the lyrics, symbolizing both physical and emotional separation. The lines "I don't know how many miles you're 'bout to put between us, geography is complicated but I know the distance" allude to the challenges of being apart and the uncertainty that it brings to the relationship. The desire for closeness is depicted through the imagery of wanting to write "stay" on the person's body, emphasizing the longing to keep them close and connected.
