Gina's World

She shot the horizon and killed the sun
We never liked the sky, Gina and I
And when I find the words
I'll tell her you hate me and how it hurts
And she'll be at your house, with my tears in her mouth
To me so good, to me, good
And I'm walking through the park
And everyone's crying 'cause it's so dark
And I am on my own, and I can't find Gina, did she go home?
And she's sitting in my house, with her tears in her mouth
'Cause she's so good to me, good
To me so good, to me, good
Grab your coat Gina hurry up
Oh my god what have we done?
Get in the car and let's fucking run
We just murdered the sun
(One, two, three, four)
Ah
And it's so hard to be good
But it's so good when it's good
And it's so hard to be good
But it's so good when it's good
Gina's on the news
How did she get there? I'm so confused
And I am at my house, with my tears in my mouth
The song "Gina's World" by Marika Hackman is a melancholic and thought-provoking track that tells a story of two people, the singer and Gina, who are disillusioned with the world around them. The lyrics talk of Gina having a gun and shooting the horizon, which kills the sun. This metaphor illustrates the idea of the characters feeling disconnected and unhappy with the way the world works. They did not like the sky, which represents the world's structure, but instead chose to take matters into their own hands. The imagery creates a sense of unease and hopelessness, and the chorus expresses how good Gina is to the singer, emphasizing their bond.
The second verse continues the story with the singer wanting to convey their feelings to Gina. However, they can't find the words to express how much it hurts that someone hates them. The lyrics "And she'll be at your house, with my tears in her mouth" suggest that Gina is a supportive figure who will do whatever it takes to help the singer feel better. When the chorus repeats, it reinforces their relationship and the importance of having someone who is "so good" to you when everything is not.
The last part of the song describes the two protagonists on the run because they "murdered the sun." They can't undo what they've done, but they can leave the world that they no longer recognize. The repetition of "it's so hard to be good, but it's so good when it's good" reflects on the complicated morality that underlies their actions. In the final line, the singer is alone with their tears, while Gina is nowhere to be found, highlighting the fleeting nature of human connections.
Overall, "Gina's World" is a beautifully written and haunting song about feeling disconnected and searching for meaning. It touches on themes of alienation, mental health, and the struggle for human connection in a world that can feel cold and unforgiving.

Yeah, Gina's her best friend. If you go on her website to the interactive album art, she has a picture of Gina that you can click on and read a blurb about the song.

I think Gina is Marika's best friend and that she asked her to write a song about their friendship (can't remember where i read it but it was said during an interview i guess)

while I don't know the exact meaning, because Marika hasn't explained it as far as I know, I interpret it as the singer and Gina being in love and doing some sort of crime together. maybe they killed the singer's boyfriend or something?
