In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

"I bring you"
Bring you down
On we plow
Try to tell me tell me he's the best
But I don't really give a good goddamn cause
I got my lunchbox and I'm armed real well
I got my lunchbox and I'm armed real well
I got my lunchbox and I'm armed real well
I want to grow up
I want to be a big rock and roll star
I want to grow up
I want to be
So no one fucks with me, yeah
"Fire"
"I bring you, fire"
"Fire"
"I bring you"
I got the pencils in my pocket, try to put me down
Want to go out, gotta get out to the playground
Want to throw down at the playground
I want to go out
Next motherfucker gonna get my metal
Next motherfucker gonna get my metal
Next motherfucker gonna get my metal
Next motherfucker gonna get my
Pow Pow Pow, Pow Pow Pow,
Pow Pow Pow, Pow Pow Pow
I want to grow up
I want to be a big rock and roll star
I want to grow up
I want to be
So no one fucks with me, yeah
Yeah
I wanna grow up
I wanna be a big rock and roll star
I wanna grow up
I wanna be
So no one fucks with me, yeah
I wanna grow up
I wanna be a big rock and roll star
I wanna grow up
I wanna be
So no one fucks with me, yeah
The song "Lunchbox" by Marilyn Manson is a portrayal of adolescent angst and the desires to be seen as powerful and successful. The lyrics depict a situation where the singer, who is likely still in school or recently graduated, is being confronted by a bully who is trying to assert dominance. However, the singer seems unfazed by this and does not care about the bully's claims of superiority. Instead, he asserts his own power by stating that he is armed with a lunchbox, which may symbolize his determination and resilience. He also expresses his desires to become a rock star, which may represent a desire for success and recognition. The repeated phrase "Next motherfucker gonna get my metal" may be a reference to the singer's aspirations for greatness and his need to overcome obstacles to achieve it. Overall, the song serves as a representation of the struggles and insecurities teenagers face, as well as their aspirations for success and power.

This was the first Marilyn Manson single I bought... My parents took the CD back to the store and cussed out the manager for letting me buy it because it had a "parental advisory" sticker on it. So, I went back the next day and bought it again....
