In "I Need Love," Maya describes a complicated relationship with a significant other that she is deeply infatuated with but seems to be in awe of at the same time. The song opens with Maya sitting across from her partner, unsure if they reciprocate her feelings. She sings, "Not clear, but I hope she loves me / Smart minds with a stupid proxy / Line's getting fuzzy." Maya's descriptions are almost contradictory, calling her partner's eyes sweet but her lips better. However, there is no mistaking the passion Maya feels for her partner.
Throughout the song, Maya compares herself to her partner, feeling that her emotions are superior to hers. She describes herself as "the trees," while her partner is "the fire."
