Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Del Mio Amore
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Da questo tuo amore fatato
È nato un fiore
Un fiore stregato
Non ha radici
Non è profumato
Non puoi coglierlo
Non puoi toccarlo
Finché ci sarà.
Questo povero amore
È come un bambino
Testardo e crudele
Mi vuole vicino
Non sa cosa fare
Non sa dove andare
Mi prende la mano
E mi fa correre
Finché qualcosa
Lo fermerà.
Del mio amore
Di questo mio amore stregato
Del mio amore ammalato
Che cosa farò?
Io non posso curarlo
Posso solo guardarlo
E lasciami portare
Fino a quando il mio cuore
Ce la farà
The lyrics of "Del Mio Amore" by Mia Martini are about a love that has caused the birth of an enchanted flower that cannot be touched or plucked but only observed as it grows. The love that has led to the birth of this strange flower is referred to as "povero amore" or poor love, indicating that it is flawed and difficult. The singer describes this love as being like a stubborn and cruel child that wants her to be close but doesn't know what to do or where to go. She allows herself to be taken on a wild ride by this love until something eventually stops it.
The singer then questions what she can do about her love, which is sick and enchanted. She can't cure it, only look at it and carry it with her until her heart can't take it anymore. The lyrics suggest that the singer is hopeless in the face of this love, at once enamored by it and unable to escape its cruelty. The song ends on a note of resignation, with the singer accepting her situation and resigned to simply observe and carry her love until her heart gives out.
