Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Ed Ora Dico Sul Serio
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Non vorrei cantare più
La canzone da niente
Che si canticchia
Distrattamente
Prendo a calci la poesia
Prendo a pugni l'armonia
E dico soltanto: no
Quando passerà la banda
La finestra chiuderò
Ed ora dico sul serio
Non vorrei cantare più
La canzone di ieri
Tutta sorriso, scacciapensieri
Tu che stai ad ascoltare
Vuoi sapere cosa accade
Nel giardino a casa mia?
Il sempre-verde è appassito
Il primo amore ha tradito
Il non-ti-scordar-di-me
Ed ora dico sul serio
Non vorrei cantare più
Io vorrei rinunciare
A fare e rifare
La ninna-nanna
Io vorrei fare silenzio
Un silenzio tanto fondo
Che il vicino picchierà
Venga il vigile il dottore
Venga il prete col portiere
A pregarmi di cantare
Ed ora dico sul serio
Non vorrei dire di più
Dico sul serio
The lyrics of Mia Martini's song Ed Ora Dico Sul Serio express her desire to stop singing and renounce her art. The first verse mentions a "nothing song" that is sung absentmindedly and lyrically describes the act of destroying both poetry and harmony. She wants to distance herself from her musical career by running away when the band passes by or closing the window to avoid being asked to perform. The second verse is directed towards her audience, as she describes her personal life and how her garden has lost its allure, her first love betrayed her, and the forget-me-nots have faded. The third verse continues the theme of wanting to quit music by renouncing lullabies and making a deep silence, one so profound that even the neighbors would knock on her door to ask her to sing again.
Ed Ora Dico Sul Serio is a powerful song that speaks about Mia Martini’s inner struggle and her deep desire to find peace within herself. The lyrics are so well written that you can feel the pain and frustrations she is going through. It is also a reflection of the artist's own life, as Mia Martini struggled with depression and personal problems throughout her career. This song portrays her as a vulnerable and sensitive person who is questioning her identity, and is finding it hard to come to terms with the pressures and expectations of her artistic profession.
