Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Se Mi Sfiori
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Di amarti ancora
Come un peccato lo nascondo
Con gli sguardi di sempre
Ma nell'animo cascate
Di solite malinconie e deserti
Segreti
Con il fuoco di te.
Cado spenta verso te
Le tue braccia, azzurri cieli
Per volare per capire
Per soffrire per dimenticare...
Se mi sfiori come il vento
Resto a vivere di te
Poi mi porti via per mano
Dove l'acqua sa di monte
Neve sciolta. ..sa di noi.
Ogni tanto ti seguo
Fra le gocce sui vetri
Mentre ti fai piccolo ritorni chiaro
Sopra il rosso di un faro
Ma ritorna la mia mente
Dove l'acqua sa di fonte
Dove bello nasce il giorno
Con il fuoco di te...
Se mi sfiori con la luna
Cado spenta verso te
Le tue braccia, azzurri cieli
Per volare per capire
Per soffrire per dimenticare...
Se mi sfiori come il vento
Resto a vivere di te
Poi mi porti via per mano
Dove l' acqua sa di monte
Neve sciolta... sa di noi
The song is titled Se Mi Sfiori, which translates to "If you touch me" in English. The lyrics express the singer's feelings towards someone they still love, but keep hidden like a sin with their usual glances. Despite trying to conceal their emotions, the singer's soul falls into usual melancholies and secrets with the fire of their love. The chorus creates images of the singer falling towards the person they love like a spent flame when touched by the moon. They describe their lover's arms as blue skies to fly in to understand and suffer to forget.
The second verse talks about the singer following the person they love through raindrops on windows. They watch them become small and clear as they return in front of a red lighthouse. But their thoughts always return to where water originates and where the beauty of the day is born, with the fire of their love in tow. The chorus repeats, stating that if the person they love touches them like the wind, they'll forever live through them and be lead by them where the water tastes of mountain snow, melting into them, full of memories.
