Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Fiore Di Melograno
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Dove c'è sempre chi ti fa la spia
Di lui non me n'è mai importato niente
Ho usato solo per andare via
Però sei diventata la sua amante
Seconda moglie senza "così sia"
Che ne sapete voi, le strade sono
Tante
Fiore di melograno
Fiore di casa mia
Gli ho dato la mia mano
Lui mi ha portato via
Fiore di margherita
Fiore di una bugia
Gli ho dato la mia vita
È stata una pazzia
Tu hai sempre avuto troppa
Fretta troppa fantasia
Chi lascia la sua terra se ne pente
Un giorno o l'altro ci ritornerà
Che l'acqua è pura solo alla
Sorgente
Io l'ho capito, ma non lo
Saprete mai
Fiore di biancospino
Fiore dell' allegria
Ora è più amaro il vino
Quanta malinconia
Fiore di quadrifoglio
Fiore di prateria
Non è solo per orgoglio
Che non torno a casa mia
Tu hai sempre avuto troppa fretta
Troppa fantasia
In the song "Fiore Di Melograno" by Mia Martini, the lyrics reflect the artist's feelings towards her people. She expresses her disdain for a community where there are always people who betray or spy on others. She states that she has never cared about such people, as she has only used them as a means to escape from that environment. However, she addresses someone specific, who has become the lover of one of those betraying individuals, becoming his second wife. She mentions that she couldn't care less about their relationship because there are many paths in life, and she wants to focus on living her own.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the symbolism of different flowers. "Fiore di melograno" and "fiore di casa mia" (flower of pomegranate and flower of my home) represent a personal connection to her roots and origins. She gave her hand to someone, metaphorically meaning that she trusted them, but they ended up taking her away from the place she considered home. "Fiore di margherita" (flower of daisy) and "fiore di una bugia" (flower of a lie) portray the betrayal she experienced. She devoted her life, believing in this person, and it ended up being a foolish decision.
The lyrics also touch on the theme of regret and longing for one's homeland. It is mentioned that those who leave their land will eventually realize their mistake and return. The imagery of "l'acqua è pura solo alla sorgente" (the water is pure only at the source) portrays the understanding that one can only truly appreciate or find purity in their origins. However, the singer acknowledges that while she understands this, others will never comprehend her perspective.
Continuing with the floral symbolism, "fiore di biancospino" (flower of hawthorn) represents joy, but now the wine has become bitter due to the sadness and melancholy she feels. "Fiore di quadrifoglio" (flower of four-leaf clover) symbolizes luck, but in this context, it represents her pride and refusal to go back to her homeland. It is not mentioned explicitly why she won't return, but it seems to be related to her impatience and vivid imagination, which suggest that she prefers to keep moving forward rather than returning to what she left behind.
Overall, these lyrics convey Mia Martini's frustration with her community, her regretful experiences with betrayal and love, and her decision not to go back to her homeland due to a combination of pride, impatience, and her imaginative nature.
