Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

The song “Notturno” by Mia Martini discusses the idea of time, and how we often feel the need to rush through life without taking a moment to appreciate the present. Martini sings about how there is always time tomorrow for our ideas and dreams, but for now, she just needs a moment to be present in the humid autumn air that descends unexpectedly. She contrasts this desire for stillness with the idea of speed, and how we often feel the need to move quickly through life without really savoring it. She expresses a desire to believe in a single moment, symbolized by a nighttime train that crosses over the blue of her night, and carries away her invisible thoughts. The sense of longing and unattainability here is palpable, as she seems to be searching for something just out of reach.
She touches on the theme of nostalgia with the line “È come la pioggia/ Che cade in questa via, lo sai” (It’s like the rain/ that falls on this street, you know). She doesn’t remember how old she was when she first felt this way, but suggests that perhaps she is still the same as she was back then, unable to change. However, she still holds onto hope for the future, that she may someday be able to release an invisible airplane that will glide over the blue of her night and take away her thoughts. Unite un grande autore come Maurizio Fabrizio e "la voce" di Mimì e questo si ottiene: quasi 4 minuti di emozione pura. Non dimentichiamo che Fabrizio e Martini sono insieme anche in "Almeno tu nell'universo", e che Fabrizio, oltre a tante altre canzoni, è anche tra gli autori de "I migliori anni della nostra vita" cantata da Renato Zero. Grande gente per grande musica!
