Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Padrone
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
terra più da arare né rami che
potrai tagliare posso accenderti il
fuoco e dirti resta qui, rimani, io
son quella di sempre fra le tue
mani ma non parlare più, padrone
più d’amore.
Stagioni ne ho viste anch'io
caldo e il freddo ho sopportato io.
Io, con tutto l'orgoglio mio la
polvere ho morso io e ho visto
cadere giù foglie e stelle.
No stavolta ti dico no, la stessa
insolenza,
no la tua indifferenza, no
stavolta no.
E una volta di più per me che
senso ha dopo tante sconfitte,
averti per padrone, della mente, del
tempo che va, padrone strappare
un morso del tuo pane senza fame.
Riflesse negli occhi tuoi le morte
stagioni ormai non portano più il
tuo nome meglio se tu vai.
The song Padrone by Mia Martini is a powerful and emotional piece that delves into themes of oppression, resilience, and the search for freedom. The title "Padrone" means "master" and it sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics in the song. Mia sings from the perspective of someone who is tired of being oppressed and manipulated by their master. She talks about how she has endured different seasons, and that there is no more land to plow or branches to cut. This suggests that she has given her all to the master and is now depleted.
Mia then goes on to say that she could light a fire and ask him to stay, but pleads with him not to speak of love anymore. She goes on to say that she has seen seasons come and go, and has endured extreme heat and cold. Through her proud nature, she has bitten the dust and watched the fall of leaves and stars. However, this time she will not endure the same insolence and indifference from the master. She tells him that after so many defeats, there is no sense in having him as a master. She wants to be free from his grasp, and it is better if he leaves.
Overall, the song Padrone is a powerful and emotive piece that explores themes of oppression, resilience, and the search for freedom. It shows that no matter how much one gives in to a master, there comes a time when one has had enough and the only option is to break free.
