Born John Stephen Sudduth in Louisiana, Mikky Ekko had a nomadic childhood, moving around America's deep south with his preacher father. Having settled briefly in Tupelo, Mississippi and absorbed as much gospel as he could, he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, and started playing in bands. Mikky Ekko began working as a songwriter for other artists, but realized that he wanted to be a singer himself. He released his first EP, "Strange Fruit" (produced by Tim Lauer) on February 15, 2009 containing the first songs he’d written by himself, most of them a capella. Ekko says of his location, Nashville, United States that he is "fortunate to be in a city that’s so loving and hospitable." From September 2009, he toured with the Nashville-based collective group, Ten Out of Tenn.

And I wished youd stop
Only for long enough
Long enough
Its
Hard
To
Say
I ask you
One last time
Did I hold you too tight
Did I not let enough light in
Oooh-oooh-oooh
Oooh-oooh-oooh
Oooh-oooh-oooh
Oooh-oooh-oooh
If a feeling appears
If your mind should sway
Its not a secret you should keep
I won't let you slip away
We used to be closer than this
We used to be closer than this
We used to get closer than this
Is it something you miss
We used to be closer than this
We used to be closer than this
We used to get closer than this
Is it something you miss
Winged or chained
I ask you
Would you have stayed
Did I hold you too tight
Did I not let enough light in
Oooh-oooh-oooh
Oooh-oooh-oooh
Oooh-oooh-oooh
Oooh-oooh-oooh
The song "Chained" by Mikky Ekko is a reflective and emotional piece about a relationship that has faded away. The opening line "I watched you breathe in, and I wished you'd stop," sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is conflicted about whether the relationship is worth holding onto or letting go. The line "Separate or combine, I ask you one last time," showcases this inner turmoil.
There is also a sense of regret that permeates the song. The lines "Did I hold you too tight, did I not let enough light in," suggest that the singer may have been too possessive or not given enough room for growth in the relationship. The refrain of "oooh-oooh-oooh" adds to the overall feeling of sadness and introspection.
The song then shifts to the present moment, with the singer acknowledging that the relationship has changed. They question whether it is something that can be fixed, asking "Is it something you miss?" There is a sense of longing and nostalgia for what was lost, highlighted by the repetition of "We used to be closer than this."
The final lines, "Winged or chained, I ask you, would you have stayed," encapsulate the central question of the song. The singer is asking if things would have been different if they had been "winged" and given more freedom, or "chained" and held more tightly. Ultimately, the song is about the complexity of relationships and the inevitable changes that come with them.
