Ballad
Ministry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pick up the Goddamn phone
I pay to hear you lie
I saw you on T.V.
There's nothing here for me

I'll pay the price
So pick up the Goddamn phone
I'm just a voice you cannot see
But you act as if you know me

You chat away while I bleed
Then take my money

Overall Meaning

The Ministry's song "Ballad" which appears on their album "With Sympathy" contains powerful lyrics that depict the singer's desperation to connect with someone who they feel has betrayed them. The chorus stands out as the singer urges the person on the other end of the phone to respond to their desperate calls for attention. They pay to hear them lie, indicating that they no longer trust the person but are still seeking some sort of connection or closure. The line "I saw you on TV" may indicate that the person has become famous or successful, but that fame has caused the singer to lose touch with them. The verse's closing line, "Then take my money," adds another layer of desperation as if the singer is willing to pay any price for this person's attention.

Overall, "Ballad," appears to be a song about the tragedy of unrequited love, trust, and betrayal. The powerful lyrics paint a picture of a person whose heart has been broken, and their generosity is being taken advantage of, and they are searching for closure or a response from someone who used to be close to them. The mixture of desperation, anger, and sadness in the singer's voice makes the song raw, emotionally heavy, and relatable.

Sooooo many "New Metal" bands tried to put scratching into their music... See, boys, this is how it´s done... Ministry, one of a kind...

Ian Reed

@AsMoDeUs s Skinny Puppy were around for years and already recognized as the true pioneers of the industrial genre before NIN was even a band.

AsMoDeUs s

@Ian Reed yeah but what about nin?

RSProduxx

@Ian Reed for me it was Oomph when they were still playing small clubs in Germany... I remember Skinny Puppy being pretty huge among the "Straight Edge" and vegan Hardcore crowd in my area. Don´t know much more than a couple of songs tbh though
