Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Better in the Long Run

One more down to drink you off my mind
Lord knows I've tried a thousand times to give you up
But it's closing time and we both know why
I am just too selfish I guess
I know you're tired and restless
It's no surprise we've come undone
You say it's better in the long run
We've been driving down this highway
Now we're out of gas too far out of town
Oh and here we are all tangled up and sideways
You're all broken down, yeah I am breaking down
I am just too selfish I guess
I know you're tired and restless
It's no surprise we've come undone
But I can't unlove you just because
You say it's better in the long run
Oh maybe somewhere a little down the line
I'll give a little better leaving us behind
Maybe someday, oh I'll be fine
And you'll move on and I will too
But still I don't see getting over you
Oh no, no
I am just too selfish I guess
I know you're tired and restless
It's no surprise we've come undone
Oh no, I can't unlove you just because
You say it's better in the long run
In the long run
Ooh, in the long run
In the long run
In the long run
The lyrics to Miranda Lambert's song Better in the Long Run describe a toxic relationship in which two people are unable to let go of each other. The first verse sets the scene of the singer trying to drink the memories of the other person away with cheap wine in a coffee cup. The second verse describes the couple's struggle as they drive down a highway, all the while their relationship is falling apart.
The chorus contains the crux of the song. The singer knows that their relationship is not working and that they are both "tired and restless" but they are unable to move on because they are "too selfish" to let go. The other person tries to convince the singer that "it's better in the long run" to end it now, but the singer cannot unlove the other person.
Verse three brings up the idea that maybe someday they will be able to move on, but for now, they are stuck in a cycle of trying to hold on to something that doesn't work. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus and the line "in the long run" reminding the listener that sometimes it's hard to see what's best for you in the present moment, but in the end, it will be okay.
Overall, Better in the Long Run is a song about a turbulent relationship in which both parties are struggling to let go, even though they know they should. It's a poignant reminder that sometimes the things we want are not always what's best for us.
