Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Smoking Jacket
Miranda Lambert Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A deeper pocket with money to burn
I want a man who knows his status
And he makes a habit of loving me till it hurts
He might be heavy on the pedal
But he knows how to take it slow
He might be quite continental
Yes, he is
I want a man with a smoking jacket and
A car thats classic living bourgeoisie
I want a man whose heart is tragic
But he makes his magic every night on me
We go together just like nicotine and Chanel
And when he lights up I'm his lucky strike
Waiting for him to exhale
I want a man with a smoking jacket and
A deeper pocket with money to burn
I want a man who knows his status
And he makes a habit of loving me till it hurts
Velvet and refined, he's defined to hold me
I don't need a diamond, I like wearing his smoke rings
I want a man, I want a man
I want a man
I want a man with a smoking jacket
And he lights his matches with kerosene
I want a man, I want a man
I want a man with a smoking jacket
I want a man, I want a man
I want a man with a smoking jacket
The lyrics to Miranda Lambert's song "Smoking Jacket" describe the singer's desire and attraction towards a particular type of man. The smoking jacket symbolizes sophistication and luxury, representing the singer's longing for someone with a deeper pocket and the ability to lavish her with material comforts. More than just wealth, she desires a man who knows his status and is accustomed to living a certain lifestyle. However, it is not just about the external trappings; the singer wants a man who can love her intensely, even if it hurts.
The lyrics also emphasize the balance between fast and slow, continental and domestic. The man the singer desires may live life to the fullest, but he also knows how to take it slow when needed. He may be worldly and cultured but is willing to take her home, indicating a sense of intimacy and commitment.
The song further suggests a sense of synergy and chemistry between the singer and the desired man, comparing their connection to the relationship between nicotine and Chanel. Just as she becomes a lucky strike when he lights up, she eagerly waits for him to exhale, implying a mutual dependence and anticipation in their relationship.
Overall, "Smoking Jacket" portrays the singer's longing for a man who embodies a mix of sophistication, passion, and financial stability, offering a glimpse into her desires and preferences in a partner.
