Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

for those texas country bands
playing all them songs about texas pride
well you can make one little bet
I ain't seen my fan club yet
but I'm hell bent for gettin them on my side
I sing the eyes of texas
and I shout out T for texas every hour
I've been drown in whiskey river and I've played down at the La Grange
and the rose of san antone is my favorite flower
I saw Robert Earl Keen
at the dance hall down in green
he said the party never ends down aggy way
yeah and Dallas has their show with old David Allen Coe
he never even called me by my name
well I can rope a steer
drink a keg of Lonestar beer
I got three pet armadillos and a pick up truck
I got a redneck for a mother
and I'm here to tell you brother
if you ain't born in texas then you're out of luck
cus' them people down in texas dont give a dog-gone if
you ain't born in texas then you better go home
Miranda Lambert's song "Texas Pride" is a ballad dedicated to the state of Texas and what it means to be a Texan. The lyrics begin by acknowledging the popularity of Texas country music bands and their songs about Texas pride. Lambert admits that she has yet to see her own fan club, but she is determined to win them over with her music.
The song includes references to several iconic Texas symbols and locations, such as the "eyes of Texas," the range, and cities like Dallas and San Antonio. Lambert mentions seeing Robert Earl Keen at a dance hall in Green and how he said that the party never ends in Aggieland. She also remarks about David Allen Coe, who never even called her by name when they played together in Dallas.
Lambert uses humor and sarcasm in the lyrics to highlight the stereotypes associated with being a Texan. She boasts of being able to rope a steer, drink a keg of Lonestar beer, and having pet armadillos and a pickup truck. She also mentions having a redneck mother and how, in Texas, being born there is essential to earning respect. The song ends with the repeated statement that if you're not born in Texas, you better go home because Texans don't care about outsiders.
Overall, "Texas Pride" is a playful and passionate tribute to the state of Texas and the pride that Texans feel for their heritage and culture.
