I don't know how you do it, a never-ending light
I can't see it from your view, couldn't imagine if I tried
Staring down the dark, with your eyes open wide
And in this moment, oh I can see you
Show me the way, the way, the way
I'm right beside you every day
Looking back I see how the days all added up
I'd give anything for more, but it'd never be enough
I know it must feel like you're running out of time
But the end is not the end, when you leave so much behind
And in this moment, oh I can see you
Show me the way, the way, the way
We can run run run right to the edge
I'm right beside you every day
Every day
Oh all your life
Goes racing by
Right before your eyes
Oh all your life
Goes racing by
Right before your eyes
And you show me the way, the way, the way
Show me the way, the way, the way
Show me the way, the way, the way
We can run run run right to the edge
I'm right beside you every day
Every day
The Moon Taxi's song "The Way" is a moving tribute to appreciation and support to someone close to the singer who is battling adversity or fighting a lost cause. It opens with the racing urgency of the situation, stating that the fight would not be given up without resistance. The second line infers the determination of the individual, the "never-ending light" and the courage that they possess. The concept of perspective is reinforced by the next line ("I can't see it from your view"), implying that the individual's strength and fortitude could not be envisioned if attempted to comprehend from a different standpoint. The fourth line ("Staring down the dark, with your eyes open wide") references the intensity and focus of the individual in the face of obstacle and challenges.
The chorus of the song contains the powerful plea for direction and leadership, entailing the faithful request of the singer to show him/her the way ("Show me the way, the way, the way"). The following lines reiterate the idea of the firm spirit and bonded connection between the singer and the person they speak about, stating that they are ready to follow their loved one to "the edge". The second verse describes the reminiscence of the past accomplishments or failures, the feeling of time's inadequacy, and the endurance. The last sentence concerning the end is an emphasis that departure from life should not be disappointing or frustrating, as long as it is enriched by the positive elements left behind.
