What Is
Morgan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

How could you be content, happy
Living, surviving, in a box
Not even knowing there's a lock
But, the key is that the key is your mind
Sometimes, it's hard to find that peace of mind
That piece of your mind
That still thinks for itself
Suffocating underneath the debris piled on by everyone else
Please don't sell yourself

Overall Meaning

In Morgan's song "What Is," the lyrics express a sense of dissatisfaction with living a confined and limited life, settling for mere survival and contentment without ever realizing one's true potential. The opening lines convey a disbelief at how someone can be content with living within the confines of a box, metaphorically representing a restricted and mundane existence. The singer suggests that many people may not even be aware that they are living within this box, symbolizing their lack of awareness of the limitations they have placed upon themselves.

The lyrics further emphasize the importance of unlocking one's mind and expanding their horizons. The key to breaking free from this box lies within the mind itself, suggesting that it is our own thoughts and perceptions that can either limit us or set us free. However, the singer acknowledges that finding peace and maintaining an independent mindset can be challenging. They refer to the struggle of maintaining a piece of your mind that still thinks for itself, implying that societal pressures and the influence of others can suffocate individual thoughts and perspectives.

Nope, sorry. Iā€™ve never had a conversation about how ethnic my children would look.
Thatā€™s really odd.

Just as odd (f*cked up) as a sister saying her son has Asian eyes when heā€™s 100% white.

Just my opinion - but looking at people and thinking about ethnicity/race first can be offensive to many people.

Also, I have friends who heard strangers on the transit comment by saying ā€œwhat are your kidsā€ to twin girls (mixed race, blonde and blue eyes but otherwise inherited much of their Japanese ancestry in appearance). It was rude to ask the girls (4 years old at the time) and they were taught to not acknowledge those type of invasive questions from anyone.

So itā€™s rude and not welcome, and read the room before you talk about someoneā€™s ethnicity to individual or their parents. Itā€™s called manners.

Context: the British invented colonialism and the cruelties done to the Other (non-western, non-white) leading to multiple of ongoing injustices today (including those in the land formerly known as Palestine) so forgive me if Iā€™m not surprised Prince Charming said it. Iā€™m sure he didnā€™t understand the implication of his ignorance.
