When she was twelve, her father gave her a guitar since he was worried about her being shy. Popular musician and composer Patricio Teixeira and classical guitarist Solon Ayala were her teachers. While still a teenager, she met a number of singers and composers who took part of Bossa Nova's musical revolution, in late 50s and early 60s, including Roberto Menescal, Carlos Lyra, Ronaldo Bôscoli, João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim.
By 1963, after singing as an amateur for a few years, she became a professional and toured with Sergio Mendes. In the mid-1960s, the institution of military dictatorship in Brazil led her to sing increasingly political lyrics. Her show "Opinião" reflected her political beliefs and she had largely switched to political music by this point. In 1964, she even spoke against bossa nova as a movement, calling it "alienating". In 1968, being part of the Tropicália movement, she appeared on the album Tropicália: ou Panis et Circenses, performing "Lindonéia."
She later left Brazil for Paris and in the 1970s abandoned music to focus on her family. She returned to music later and when she discovered, in 1979, that she had an inoperable brain tumor she increased her productivity as much as possible. She died in 1989, leaving a great legacy behind her succesful years of career.

Vou trabalhar, meu bem querer,
Se Deus quiser quando eu voltar,
Do mar,
um peixe bom, eu vou trazer...
Meus companheirs também vão voltar,
E a Deus do céu vamos agradecer !
Pescador não esqueças de mim!
Vou rezar pra ter bom tempo,
Meu nego,
Pra não ter tempo ruim...
Vou fazer sua caminha macia...
Perfumada de alecrim...
Pedro! Pedro! Pedro!
Chico! Chico! Chico!
Nino! Nino! Nino!
Zeca! Zeca! Zeca!
Cade voces, homens de Deus?
Eu bem que disse a José!
Não vá José ! não vá José!
Meu Deus!
Com tempo desses não se sai!
Quem vai pro mar, quem vai pro mar,
Não vém!
Pedro! Pedro! Pedro...
Chico! Chico! Chico...
Nino! Nino! Nino...
Zeca! Zeca! Zeca...
É tão triste ver...
Partir alguem...
Que a gente quer...
Com tanto amor...
E suportar...
A agonia...
De esperar voltar...
Viver olhando o céu e o mar...
A incerteza a torturar... a gente fica só...
Tão sóa gente fica só...
Tão só...
É triste esperar...
Uma incelênça...
Entrou no paraiso...
Adeus! irmão Adeus!
Até o dia de Juizo!
Adeus! irmão Adeus!
Até o dia de Juizo...
Minha jangada vai sair pro mar,
Vou trabalhar, meu bem querer,
Se Deus quiser quando eu voltar,
Do mar,
Um peixe bom, eu vou trazer...
Meus companheirs também vão voltar
E a Deus do céu vamos agradecer !
The song "Suite Dos Pescadores" by Nara Leão is a lamentation of a fisherman's departure to sea, as well as the anxiety and longing of those left behind. The song begins with the singer announcing his departure, stating that he will return with a good catch if it is God's will. The singer then bids farewell to those he is leaving behind, reminding them not to forget him while he is away. He prays for fair weather, and promises to leave behind a comfortable bed, scented with rosemary, for his beloved.
The refrain of the song, repeated throughout, is a desperate plea for the singer's fellow fishermen Pedro, Chico, Nino, and Zeca to return safely from sea. The song takes a tragic turn when the singer reveals that one of his comrades has been lost at sea. The song ends with farewells to the departed and a prayer for their reunion in the afterlife.
"Suite Dos Pescadores" is a poignant and emotional portrayal of the hardships of the fishing life, including the constant danger of death and the toll on personal relationships. The song's bittersweet melody enhances the sense of longing and despair of those who must wait for their loved ones to return home safely.

Quanta emoção em uma voz, quanta sinceridade?!
Época em que mesmo correndo riscos de vida, se fazia música de protesto, se fazia arte, existia antes de tudo um clamor por liberdade, pelo direito do ser humano.
