I Can't See for Lookin'
Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maybe I talk too much,
Maybe I've lost m' touch.
I guess I don't know what's cookin'
'Cause I just can't see for lookin'.

Other boys have their chicks,
Two, three, four, five or six.
I don't seem to get a bookin'
'Cause I just can't see for lookin'.

I'm kinda crazy,
Like a daisy
Up that well known tree, poor me.
I'm sittin', hopin',
Horoscopin'
Won't some sista take a chance with me?

I've been around the town,
Everyone brings me down.
I give up hope, I'm just a dope.
There ain't no gals for hookin',
I just can't see for lookin'.

I've been around the town,
Everyone brings me down.
I give up hope, I'm just a dope.
There ain't no gals for hookin',
I just can't see for lookin'

No, just can't see for lookin'
No, no.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nat King Cole's "I Can't See for Lookin'" convey a story of a man who seems to be struggling to find companionship despite his desire to do so. He admits to talking too much and possibly having lost his touch. He wonders what's wrong with him since he can't seem to get a booking with any girl. He acknowledges that other boys have multiple girls, but he can't seem to find even one. The man is desperate, hoping that someone would finally take a chance with him.

The lyrics suggest that the man is surrounded by people who bring him down and make him feel worthless. He has given up hope and believes he's just a "dope." However, it's clear that the problem is not with him, but with the inability to see what's in front of him. He's too preoccupied with looking for someone and missing out on opportunities that may be right in front of him.

Overall, the song's lyrics are relatable to anyone who has ever struggled to find love or companionship. It shows that often, people who want love the most are the ones who struggle to find it. Sometimes, the problem lies in their perception rather than their qualities.

This brings back fond, fond memories.   This was Cole's most artistic period, with his trio.  I respect his commercial period.  After all, there were bills to pay that his artistic period couldn't keep up with.  Hancock Park takes a lotta moola just to water the lawn.
