Down
Nazareth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another bridge I have burned
A lesson I learned
One more mistake to my cause
One more hand got lost
In a game
So I was up for awhile
Livin' in style
Feelin' high on the hog

I was down

Now some say I lost
His other soul
How barely a young man
Can sink so low
And I don't know.... don't care at all

I had a similar dream
of my dreams
while
I thought I had wandered a mile
I was wrong

Now I'm on the way up
When you reach the top
no way to go

And people just don't wanna know
When you're down

Overall Meaning

The Nazareth song "Down" is about the ups and downs of life and the consequences of making mistakes. The lyrics describe a person who has burned another bridge and made one more mistake in their cause. But this experience has taught them a lesson, and they are up for a while, living in style and feeling high on the hog. However, they soon find themselves down again, and some people say that they've lost their other soul and that it's unbelievable how a young man could sink so low. But the singer of the song doesn't care about what people think because they have had similar experiences and know that life can be like this.

In the second verse, the singer talks about having a dream of their own while they thought they had wandered a mile. But they were wrong, and now they are on the way up again. The last two lines of the song say that when you reach the top, there's no way to go, and people just don't want to know when you're down.

The song highlights the cyclical nature of life and the fact that everyone has highs and lows, wins and losses. It's about accepting one's mistakes and moving on, even when others judge you. There's also a sense of the inevitability of the ups and downs of life and the fact that people often turn a blind eye to those who are struggling.

According to the notes, this was a B side to the Love Hurts single. I find it so catchy, but this recording (meaning mine, as well) sounds like a 4th or 5th generation copy that was remastered. Either that or they didn't take nearly as much care to record this as well as they did Hair of the Dog album proper...which is a shame. Thanks for posting it, though. Maybe someone will see/hear this and post the actual flip side of the Love Hurts 45 so we can hear it, too.

I don't really care

Never heard this. I thought I had heard all their stuff

It's from the remasterd version of Hair of the doog, hence the cover.
