She first gained fame with her trip hop-inspired debut album, Whoa, Nelly! (2000), which was a critical and commercial success that spawned two top-10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, "I'm Like a Bird" and "Turn Off the Light". The first of the two singles won her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Furtado's introspective folk-heavy 2003 second album, Folklore, explored her Portuguese roots. Its singles received moderate success in Europe, but the album's underperformance compared to her debut was regarded as a sophomore slump.
Furtado's third album, Loose (2006), was a smash hit and became her bestselling album, with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide, also making it one of the bestselling albums of the 2000s. Considered a radical image reinvention, Furtado continued to explore her Portuguese heritage while leaning heavier into hip hop. The album spawned four successful number-one singles worldwide; "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Say It Right" and "All Good Things (Come to an End)".
She released her first Spanish-language album, Mi Plan, in 2009, which won her a Latin Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album. In 2012, Furtado released her nostalgia-inspired fifth album The Spirit Indestructible. Furtado split with her management and went independent thereafter, releasing her indie-pop sixth album, The Ride, in 2017 under her own label Nelstar Entertainment.
She has won many awards throughout her career, including one Grammy Award from seven nominations, one Latin Grammy Award, ten Juno Awards, one BRIT Award, one Billboard Music Award, one MTV Europe Music Award, one World Music Award, and three Much Music Video Awards. Furtado has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame, and was awarded Commander of the Order of Prince Henry on February 28, 2014, by Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the then-President of Portugal.

Hey I'm wasting my judge
Don't know if you can hold me but,
I gotta honor it yeah
Depending on the minute and depending on the hours
I guess I got some time to waste so
We can chop away the hours, yeah
And then let's talk, and, and then, and then
Let's sing, and then less walking, and less talking
And we'll sing, yeah
Bring your car in the parking lot
And ride all night till you get a spot
Cause we ain't doing nothing
No we ain't doing nothing
Meet us in the parking lot
We're turn the speakers up
Cause we ain't doing nothing
We ain't doing nothing
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha
Eh-eh-eh
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha
Eh-eh-eh
I'm telling all my friends that it's pretty casual
They tryin'... what they see
Meanwhile I'm riding with you, with you
Depending on the minute and depending on the hours
Depending on the chemicals yeah we can make some power
Cool so let's sing, and then let's walk
And then let's talk, and, and then, and then
Let's sing, and then less walking, and less talking
And we'll sing, yeah
Bring your car in the parking lot
And ride all night till you get a spot
Cause we ain't doing nothing
No we ain't doing nothing
Meet us in the parking lot
We're turn the speakers up
Cause we ain't doing nothing
We ain't doing nothing
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha
Eh-eh-eh
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha
Eh-eh-eh
Hand in hand and arm in arm
Take me to your favorite barn
We can dance in the mud
It's slippery, show me all you buckery
Let's dance in the rain, keep dancing
Nothing unusual about it
You're just a regular guy, and there's no way around it
If you walk with me then we can talk about it
And if you want me talking let's see what we do about it
Bring your car in the parking lot
And ride all night till you get a spot
Cause we ain't doing nothing
No we ain't doing nothing
Meet us in the parking lot
We're turn the speakers up
Cause we ain't doing nothing
We ain't doing nothing
Bring your car in the parking lot
And ride all night till you get a spot
Cause we ain't doing nothing
No we ain't doing nothing
Meet us in the parking lot
We're turn the sṗeakers up
Cause we ain't doing nothing
We ain't doing nothing
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha
Eh-eh-eh
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha
Eh-eh-eh
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha
Eh-eh-eh
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha
Eh-eh-eh
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha
Eh-eh-eh
Na-na-na-na-na
Le-le, ha-a-a-a-ha

We could dance, if you wanna dance, if you wanna dance
Ain't nothing I can't show ya
We could dance, if you wanna dance, if you wanna dance
Ain't nothing I can't show ya
We could dance, if you wanna dance, if you wanna dance
Ain't nothing I can't show ya
We could dance, if you wanna dance, if you wanna dance
Ain't nothing I can't show ya
In Nelly Furtado's song "Parking Lot," the singer finds herself unexpectedly caught off guard by someone she may not entirely trust but is nonetheless drawn to. She sings about wasting her judgment and not knowing whether or not she can be held accountable for her actions with this person, but ultimately decides to go along with it for the moment. The lyrics depict a sense of spontaneity and living in the moment, as the singer suggests that they "chop away the hours" and spend the night singing, walking, and talking in a parking lot. The chorus repeats the phrase "We ain't doing nothing" as a nod to the fact that they don't necessarily need a specific activity or plan to have a good time together.

You caught me off guard, you know
I'm surprised that we're together, but I'm intrigued
Hey I'm wasting my judge
I don't want to judge the situation too quickly
Don't know if you can hold me but,
I don't know if this romance will last
I gotta honor it yeah
But I'm going to give it a chance
Depending on the minute and depending on the hours
Our relationship is unpredictable and can change at any moment
I guess I got some time to waste so
But I'm willing to take that risk and see where it goes
We can chop away the hours, yeah
So let's spend some time together and see what happens
Cool so let's sing, and then let's walk
Let's enjoy each other's company and have some fun
And then let's talk, and, and then, and then
We can talk about whatever comes up in the moment
Let's sing, and then less walking, and less talking
As the night progresses, we can focus less on these activities and more on each other
Bring your car in the parking lot
Let's find a place where we can be alone
And ride all night till you get a spot
We can spend the whole night together if we want to
Cause we ain't doing nothing
We don't need a plan or an itinerary, we can just enjoy each other's company
No we ain't doing nothing
We don't need to entertain ourselves with anything other than each other
Meet us in the parking lot
Let's make this happen
We're turn the speakers up
Let's make it a party
I'm telling all my friends that it's pretty casual
I'm keeping this relationship low-key for now
They tryin'... what they see
But my friends are picking up on the fact that I'm into you
Meanwhile I'm riding with you, with you
But I don't care what they think, as long as I get to be with you
Depending on the chemicals yeah we can make some power
With chemistry like this, anything is possible
Hand in hand and arm in arm
Let's be close to each other
Take me to your favorite barn
Show me what's important to you
We can dance in the mud
Let's be silly and have fun together
It's slippery, show me all you buckery
Even if things get messy, I want you to be yourself around me
Let's dance in the rain, keep dancing
Even if things are tough or unpredictable, let's stick together and keep moving forward
Nothing unusual about it
We're not doing anything that hasn't been done before, but that doesn't mean it's not special to us
You're just a regular guy, and there's no way around it
I don't care about your social status or what other people think, I just like you for who you are
If you walk with me then we can talk about it
Let's keep this relationship going and see where it takes us
And if you want me talking let's see what we do about it
If you want me to be more vocal about my feelings, let's see if we can make that happen
We could dance, if you wanna dance, if you wanna dance
Let's keep enjoying each other's company and have a good time
Ain't nothing I can't show ya
I want to be open and honest with you, and share everything with you
