Part of it is sang in contemporary fasfion. It's quite common for her to swap back and forth. With her last 2 albums she still uses classical voice (not all the time), but with much less legato.

She's a Classically trained Mezzo Soprano. One voice in a million, literally, can become a Mezzo Soprano. Here range is enormous and her vocal power is such that she can sing without a mic and the first 10 rows will still hear her. She's amazing.

She originally started out singing mezzo repertoire, but even though in her earlier years she definitely sounded like a mezzo because of her dark tone, she is definitely a soprano. Her tessitura was and still is higher than the average mezzo. Even in her early years (like Oceanborn and Wishmaster) she sounded like a soprano with a very, very dark tone. It's easy to mistake her for a mezzo because of that. Nonetheless her voice is flawless!

+dath 2015 I think in interviews Tarja has said that she didn't pursue opera because her metal career began so she decided to pursue that instead. She continues to train classically (although she is using more of her chest voice as of late). I think had she never been asked to join Nightwish, she would have become a real opera singer professionally.

What I mean by all the mezzo talk is that typically a signature mezzo sound is darker and deeper than a soprano (this is called "timbre") and is the main distinguishing factor of the difference between a soprano and a mezzo. common misconception: voice type is all about range. It is not. Mezzos can sing just as high as sopranos, but their voices are more comfortable singing lower (the range a singer is most comfortable singing in is called "tessitura"). Tarja began her career as a mezzo-sounding soprano. This is because although she had a dark voice like a mezzo, her high notes sounded like a soprano's. She transitioned into soprano rep

+dath 2015 she transitioned as a soprano maybe during the century child album, as you can tell that in century child and once her tone is a bit lighter than in say Wishmaster. Before that I'd say she was a soprano who was mistyped as a mezzo. Not that she sounded "wrong," I actually LOVE her deeper voice in the earlier Nightwish albums! But she lightened her tone to be able to sing higher because having a darker color makes high notes harder to sing.

She is not under qualified, but to be hired as a real opera singer in opera houses she would need a lot more training. Opera is a very precise art. Her technique is ALMOST perfect, but she has slight alterations that would be needed for her to be a real opera singer. She would have probably pursued this career had Nightwish never happened, I'm guessing. I hope this answered your question!

WickedKnightAlbel Well, I have noticed that metal as a genre is deeper than most other music genres. For example, you don't get such a range of emotions in rap... that's just mostly sex, drugs, and gang violence. Granted, there are some meaningful songs, but they're not quite as common as with metal. Believe it or not, Jimmy Wayne, a country/western singer, started out emulating Black Sabbath's style of music, singing mostly about the abuse he faced growing up... and I think that's where metal's emotions come in. It tackles really hard issues, from abuse to separation to suicide.

Old music is so depressing because it always reminds you of a good time in your life. But what I quickly learnt in life is that it's okay to be sad about that good feeling because life isn't all about that one good feeling, it's about making so many more for when your time comes you can reflect on a whole movie of good memories and not just one you tried to hold onto forever.

This song changed me forever. It was my introduction to Nightwish. Still remember seeing this clip for the first time in 2004. It was as if the pain I felt inside found a way to the visible world. It opened a new world for me. Once more I'm listening in November 2019...So much has happened and changed, yet the feeling of being lost remains. Nemo my name forevermore!

As a autistic teenager with a lot of mental health issues this song and other nightwish songs always always resonate with me and make me feel something more then all the straightforward pop songs about mental health
the song is sad and sensitive yet uplifting at the same time. It’s about the feeling of feeling lost and not knowing who you yet not giving up until you find a way out. It is a masterpiece

I hope you keep on listening to this sort of music. Kamelot, Epica and Avantasia are similar to this. Nightwish has actually gone through two more lead singers (both female and both amazing). This is the age, when Nightwish had their most epic songs. Tarja was a huge piece if not a missing piece of Nightwish, her voice was like a trademark for Nightwish. Nemo, I wish i had an Angel, Sleeping Sun, The Riddle, Swanheart, Ghost love Score, Siren, Wishmaster etc, after Tarja left it feels like they lost something.
