Day Is Done
Norah Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the day is done
Down to earth then sinks the sun
Along with everything that was lost and won
When the day is done

When the day is done
Hope so much your race will be all run
Then you find you jumped the gun
Have to go back where you began
When the day is done

When the night is cold
Some get by but some get old
Just to show life's not made of gold
When the night is cold.

When the bird has flown

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are about the passage of time and the idea that everything must come to an end. Norah Jones is reflecting on the idea that as the day ends, everything that occurred during that time – successes or failures – must be left behind until the next day. We are reminded that life is constantly moving and that once a moment has passed we can't go back and change it.

The chorus "When the day is done" is a reminder that at the end of each day, we should hope we ran the race we were meant to run, that we accomplished what we needed to, and that we're ready to start fresh again the next day. The line "Then you find you jumped the gun, have to go back where you began" refers to the idea that sometimes we make mistakes or don't reach our goals as we had hoped, and we need to go back to the starting point and try again, learning from our failures.

The verse about the night being cold speaks to the idea that life is not always easy, and that some people may struggle more than others. The line "just to show life's not made of gold" reminds us that even in the darkest moments, there is still beauty to be found – we just have to be willing to look for it.

Overall, Norah Jones is encouraging us to embrace each day fully and do the best we can with the time we have, knowing that we can't change the past but can always strive to do better in the future.

I love pleasant, soft, sensual low female vocals!

@matiasb1985

Además es difícil hacer algo mejor con este tema que lo que hizo Nike Drake en el tema original.. Es magia pura.

+wishcraft4u2 Her voice is quite smooth and supple in its tone. All of her sustained notes have a lovely control to the that you don't tend to hear in anything other style at the moment. Also, the style is not "hipster" but a Latin Swing waltz, which has been a style for far longer than you or I have been on this earth. If you don't like the style or the fact that this is simply an interpretation of another work, please stop commenting on the video. As someone studying for a duel diploma of education and music, I assure you that your comments on this particular video are utter bullshit! Have a lovely day.

@carolina9609

I totally agree with you. Thank you, have a nice day you too! :)

@judecollie541

I wish I could laugh react to this. You're wrong about many things but I think calling it a waltz is the funniest error.

May be the best i 've heard this year.

I'm not saying you're wrong to have that opinion, but just put it in context. This recording is old. It's from a jazz album from Charlie Hunter in 2001 (a year before Norah's debut came out). So she sung it as a for-hire studio musician to fit somebody else's jazz album. it's safe to say that if Charlie Hunter wanted it sung diferently, he'd have hired another studio vocalist for the $100 or whatever Norah got paid for a day's work.

@evievan1

"It's more about ripping the Soul out of its musical context". That's exactly what I'm talking about.
