Moon Song
Norah Jones Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When it leaves the western sky
And night dissolves again to morning
Azure turns to gold
Azure turns to gold
Gonna sleep with one eye open
Gonna keep the shades half drawn
Lines and colors fall
Lines and colors fall
Gonna watch her through the window
Just as I watched you before
Smile knows but just won't tell me
I just watch her go
I just watch her go
Now I know just where the moon goes
When it leaves the western sky
And night dissolves again to morning
The moon is in your eyes
The moon is in your eyes
The moon is in your eyes
The moon is in your eyes
The song "Moon Song" by Norah Jones delves into the theme of longing and loss. In the first stanza, Norah sings about her desire to know where the moon goes when it disappears from the sky. The image of the moon disappearing and the transition from night to morning alludes to a loss or a sense of something slipping away. The mention of azure turning to gold also reinforces this sense of change and transition.
In the next stanza, Norah sings about keeping one eye open and the shades half-drawn, suggesting a sense of caution and reserve. The lines and colors falling further emphasize a feeling of things slipping away and fading into the background. She then mentions watching someone through a window, much like how she watched the person she lost before. This adds to the feeling of longing and the desire to hold onto something that is already gone.
In the final stanza, Norah finally finds her answer as to where the moon goes. She discovers that it resides in someone's eyes, possibly someone she loved and lost. The moon representing something lost or something that disappears, is compared to the person's eyes, implying that she is still yearning for that person, and despite time passing, still carries their memories.
Overall, "Moon Song" is a beautiful and deeply introspective track, exploring the emotions of loss and yearning. The song is relatable for anyone who has experienced loss or change and admirably captures a sense of sadness and nostalgia.

on The Nearness of You
The Nearness Of You - Camille Thurman -Lyrics
Its not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams do come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness of you
Saxophone Musical Interlude
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness, the nearness of you
