What worries me as someone who's into true crime shows, is that these things are the type 'warning signs' that are before a serious disaster. Cheating online is obviously bad, but to want to burn a building down etc takes a different kind of mindset entirely. I hope they're caught and jailed for a long time and soon at that!

The big things for me are the harassing the employee and when I hear about setting fire to a studio, I get nightmares of the Kyoto Animation arson attack from a few years ago. Props to Bungie for pursuing this. This stuff shouldn't be taken lightly when you threaten peoples lives.

I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember this but before the internet was so available to everyone.Youcould go to any store that sold magazines, pick up a "Tips & Tricks" or "Nintendo Power" then usually in the back of the magazine they'd have cheat codes for a bunch of games.We also had "The Game Genie".

I think it's a mix of Devs need to deal with cheat detection better (although that's probably ALOT harder than it sounds), AND taking legal action against them as well, I consider cheating like crime, if you don't do it, you have nothing to worry about, if you do, your world will suddenly come crashing down around you for your stupid mistakes.

On a side note though, I think it'd be cool if people did make mods and shit for games and Developers had a place you could submit those mods so they could be put on a white list or something for their cheat detection software, mainly for stuff that changes cosmetic things for yourself, although they would need to be re-submit when the mods get updated I assume.

Not condoning what this cheater did but frankly being someone that was an early adopter of Destiny 2 I paid for so much that Bungie just yanks out without a refund its over 300 bucks at this point that I spent just on the DLCs that have been stripped away. I am of the opinion Bungie should fail as a business for this practice of "vaulting content" people had paid for.

@LunarVVolf I kinda agree but I also realized vaulting the content wasn't all that bad, I just compare it to getting a new game, playing it till I beat it, then I never playing it again, the only difference is if I decide several years later to play that game again I can, with vaulted content you can't. Also unless it became PC exclusive I think they'd have to do something considering how bad loading was on console, and the DRAMATIC improvement vaulting made to that loading.

The storage on My PC should not be a concern to Bungie as that's my responsibility to meet "system requirements" should I wish to play. Either way I will never forgive Bungie but I wont threaten and harass the company employees I will take the civil approach and boycott their games and make others aware of this scummy vaulting tactic among family and friends or the occasional stranger on YT comments.

@LunarVVolf When I mentioned PC I meant if it was exclusive they wouldn't have had to Vault anything because PC is limited by what hardware you own, and you can actually drop graphics quality to speed things up, as opposed to console where you can't do that.

I just realized though, it would've been nice if they made all the vaulted content optional downloads instead, then PC players could download everything fine, but console players would have to debate "Do I want faster load times, or more content", that way people could just delete content they aren't using anymore for more speed, literally just have "Mercury addon, etc"

Its still the first line of defense, before people used the argument "I bought the game, so Im entitle to do as I please with it even online". Even when that affects every other player online. But the EULA does give them the right to ban him upon infrigment; and multipel times; he was well aware of the consecuences but did not care and wanted to keep affecting the playerbase. This is the kind of behaviour that will get games to eventually will ban SYSTEMS rather than "accounts" from playing online, and will hurt the resell market (but would be a win-win for console sales....as sad as it is).

While this dude obviously deserves some legal punishment for this nonsense, I don't know that I agree with using copyright law to prosecute cheating. I'm a little worried about how these arguments can be used to reinforce copyright law that prevents ANY use or modification of software (mods, fan updates, post-life content, preservation etc) particularly if they're treating each streaming instance as a violation (flashback to 10 years ago when every lets play channel was worried about being DMCA'd into oblivion for streaming/VODs).

Definitely a fair point, but I think Bungie is more concerned with the promotion of cheating ruining the online experience for others. It's also worth remembering that in using the software, you must agree to the EULA which is a legally enforceable agreement.

Communities will usually backlash against any effort to prevent freedom over the single player experience, but the multiplayer is a more difficult argument.

@GaryOfNivea No doubt, and the MP experience is their bread and butter (and deserves to be cheater free), but this seems like a case of legal convenience combined with short term thinking. I'd rather see this either prosecuted directly under the EULA (which could very well be how they're framing their copyright argument) or, ideally, under some pie-in-the-sky, easier-said-than-done, wishful thinking law that separately criminalizes degradation of community spaces instead of "copyright infringement" which feels overly broad.

I also don't think it should necessarily have to be left to the community to voice concerns over content freedom in the single player space because the companies have all the power. Which is not to say that they should have none (it IS their property), just that cases like this could be used to incorrectly establish a precedent of copyright control where companies ARE being either abusive or manipulative in their control of IP. Ideally, everyone behaves like good, rational adults, but that is evidently asking way too much.

I see people here brushing off the cheating saying it’s “whatever” but I’m glad they’re pursuing the cheating and violations on the terms of service on top of the threats. At least every night some game I play has some form of cheating, whether it’s aimbots, walls, unlock tools, or a chronus or some anti recoil mod. Do you all really want to keep dealing with that forever? That stuff didn’t exist a couple of years ago and if it did it was so rare that it was memorable, now it’s every other game you play. We play games to relax and enjoy our time and cheaters will always ruin that experience.

No matter how petty or immature this guys actions may seem.This is a prime example of what happens when an individual isn't held responsible for his/her actions.Even if you don't consider the cheating.People need to realize that their words can result in some negative consequences on their behalf,not to mention the mental distress their words can cause for those being threatened.
For far too long,when some brat got caught doing something wrong or didn't get their way.They have been allowed to pop off at the mouth & say whatever they please & everyone just brushed it off as an idle threat.So now young people think just because they have a computer between them & those they're threatening then they are free to be uncivilized.
Before you know it some kid who was rightfully punished for misconduct, is making an "Idle threat" to harm others & that's when 20+ innocent people die to a mass shooter.

Thats great you have this outlook but still I want $300 USD back from Bungie for taking away content DLC I paid for from the very beginning of Destiny2. Look at Ubisoft who is doing the same exact thing and all the hate they're getting for it. Bungie deserves to go out of business at some point for what they started. Because of them my other games may lose their DLC content I paid for. Someone should take Bungie to task that this isn't acceptable.

That said I do not condone what this cheater has done and deserves to be made example of. Doxxing and making threats against employees is such a slimy thing not to mention cheating in general is what's killing so many FPS games I don't even play them anymore. Gaming is in a sad state sighs

@LunarVVolf I've always been the type to want the physical form of games when we started getting the option to buy a disc or pay for the digital download.I knew this was where gaming was headed.To make matters worse,I just heard that game stop is contemplating on closing their doors & becoming an online distributor of digital Game downloads.Also the game manufacturer want to halt physical copies because so many people go digital They're losing $ on unsold games.yep,it won't be much longer & we'll not be able to put our game collections on display in our homes because they won't exist

@DaddyMo444 Um buddy I grew up physical media Atari VCS and Colecovision are just some of the consoles I started life out as a gamer with so I know the argument to having physical media however no where upon sale of Destiny 2 was this ever evident that this was more like a rental. It should be abundantly clear before someone makes a payment instead of locked away in the EULA verbiage. Slimy practice no matter how you slice it and part of why I no longer play Destiny 2.

Again I must reiterate despite my feelings of Bungie no one should endure the harassment and threats posed by a disgruntled player or in this case a cheater with no moral ethic to cling to.

I look forward to a time when governments take notice of this and protect consumer rights as well as game developers who get threatened.

If I was a head of a studio and someone threatened my devs like that, in building my case I would add every charge I possibly could to make sure this guys' reputation and wallet are so tarnished that he wouldn't be capable of carrying out what he said. Heck I'd get littering, j-walking, you name it on there. Separate charges for every fake account when I already have the evidence on my own servers? Absolutely. Heck with Bungie money I'd open multiple suits if possible.

The cheating itself, I'm ok with bans, selling software I'm good with civil suits. Thats almost the backstory at this point.

I don't think it's illegal to violate a EULA, nor should it be. Contracts are not law.

That said, I think most of the claims bungie are at least arguable, especially the stuff around threats. The "hacks are a derivative work" argument seems pretty weak, since consuming a derivative work isn't illegal. Unless he created the hacked version, I don't think that works.

People didnt say it but at a certain point measures to prevent cheating worsen the game experience.... If its manual checks it breaks gameplay, overly ambitious software solutions can slow even the best pcs to a crawl, goimg into a ban spree constantly without proper investigations would end up banning a LOT of honest players, lawsuits for "trivial cheating" can cost public image (why r u sueing a 13yo a**ho**? Give the kid a break) unless in extreme cases like this one that involve doxxing, threats and harassment. Face it they are always trying to deal with it but its not as easy as you think.

It's generally very difficult to get the authorities to do anything about online threats and harassment in the states.

It's called freedom of speech. They'd have to launch an investigation to find intent and means to enact on the threat, which is far too much work for what some rando said on the internet.

@Rasengdori13 I think the one caveat to this is that law enforcement and government agencies like the FBI often breach this form of "freedom of speech" all the time for other things such as percieved threats of terrorism(often when the person is a minority), and political activism. So that's not entirely a fullproof excuse on their part.

So a large part of why they aren't willing to do so for other randos, is because they don't see those threats as threatening.
