Sparks
Overseer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I keep moving I can hold off the pain
Just gotta keep moving further further away
If I stop talking the sparks are going to fly
So I'll just keep on walking
Just keep quiet

I just feel like your drifting out
Could I keep this tide from turning
If I scream and I shout
I just feel like your drifting out
Could I keep this tide from turning
I will scream and I will shout

Each day you take something
A little bigger everytime
Look at me I'm just an outline
You've taken what was mine
Each time I let you back in
A little foolish I know
Look at me I'm half the story
And I don't know where my story goes

I just feel like your drifting out
Could I keep this tide from turning
If I scream and I shout
I just feel like your drifting out
Could I keep this tide from turning
I will scream and I will shout

If I stop talking
The sparks are going to fly
So I'll just keep
Keep quiet

If I stop talking
The sparks are going to fly

So I'll just keep
Keep quiet

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Overseer's song "Sparks" explore themes of pain, isolation, and loss. The singer in the song is struggling with intense emotions he feels towards someone who he perceives as "drifting out" from his life. He tries to hold off the pain by constantly moving and keeping quiet to avoid uncontrolled outbursts. The singer is aware of the potential for sparks to fly if he stops talking, which suggests that he may have a history of conflict with this person. He also feels that the other person is taking something from him, gradually erasing his identity until he feels like only an "outline."

The chorus of the song is a repetition of the singer's fear that the tide is turning and that he is losing this person. He hopes that by screaming and shouting, he can somehow keep them from drifting away but seems uncertain if it will work. The repeated phrase "If I stop talking, the sparks are going to fly" emphasizes how much the singer is holding back and how much the other person means to him. It's a desperate plea for the other person to stay and for the singer to prevent any further loss.

Overall, the lyrics of "Sparks" are a poignant examination of the fragility of relationships and the fear of losing someone who means the world to you. It's a song about cherishing the people in our lives and holding onto them as tightly as we can, even when it feels like they're slipping away.

This and many other of your songs are one of many examples of what stopping to enjoy all the finer details in life once and a while. I remember finding Wreckage in the used section at Borders some time 2005, Never realizing how familiar some of these songs were until much later on in life.

Thank you for such moving and uniquely defined music over the years. And for blessing my repeat song button much to the dismay of my music player.
