Passenger Lyrics

Twenty seven years, twenty seven years old
Only thing I know, the only thing that gets old
I gotta sell out if I want to get sold
Don't want the devil to be taking my soul
I write songs that come from the heart
I don't give a fuck if they get into the chart, oh no
Only way I can be, is to say what I see
And have my shadow hanging over me

I don't know where I'm running, but I know how to run
'Cause running's the thing I've always done
Oh I don't know what I'm doing, but I know what I've done
I'm a hungry heart, I'm a loaded gun

Twenty seven years, twenty seven years now
Only thing I know
I know that I don't know how
To please everybody all of the time,
'Cause everybody's always fucking changing their minds
A little bit faded
A little bit jaded
Not gonna stop and I won't be persuaded
To write words I can't believe in
To see my face on a video screen

I don't know where I'm running, but I know how to run
'Cause running's the thing I've always done
Oh I don't know what I'm doing, but I know what I've done
I'm a hungry heart, I'm a loaded gun

Twenty seven years, twenty seven years done
Written six hundred songs, only twelve get sung
Eighty seven thousand cigarettes have passed through these lungs
And every single day I wish I'd never smoked one
A week brushing my teeth and a week getting my haircut
Eight years sleeping, I'm still tired when I wake up
A whole year eating and I still lost weight, fuck
Five proper girlfriends and five messy breakups
Twenty seven birthdays, twenty seven New Years
Thirty thousand quid just so I could have a few beers
Ever dying old hopes
Ever growing new fears
Don't know where I'm going but I know how I got here

I don't know where I'm running, but I know how to run
'Cause running's the thing I've always done, oh
Oh I don't know what I'm doing, but I know what I've done
I'm a hungry heart, I'm a loaded gun, oh

Said I don't know where I'm running, but I know how to run
'Cause running's the thing I've always done, oh

Oh, I don't know what I'm doing, but I know what I've done
I'm a hungry heart, I'm a loaded gun, oh

Overall Meaning

Passenger's song "27" captures the feelings and thoughts of a young artist who has spent the last 27 years of his life working on his craft. The lyrics convey both uncertainty and determination, as the artist reflects on his journey and continues to pursue his passion for songwriting. The chorus is particularly catchy and memorable, reinforcing the idea that the artist is constantly on the move, running towards something he may not fully understand but feels uncomfortable standing still.

The first verse sets the tone of the song, with lines that suggest the artist is aware of the pressures of the music industry, with its emphasis on commercial appeal and fame. He knows that to achieve success, he may have to compromise his principles and "sell out" in some way. Not wanting to lose his integrity and fearing the consequences of losing his soul, the artist is determined to write and perform music that speaks to him and is true to his vision.

The second verse delves deeper into the artist's struggles and experiences, painting a picture of someone who is constantly moving, searching for something, but not quite sure what it is. He has had some successes, but also setbacks and disappointments, from failed relationships to poor health. Despite all this, the artist is still eager to continue on his journey, driven by his passion for music and his desire to connect with his audience.

Overall, "27" is a powerful expression of the creative process and the challenges that artists face in pursuing their dreams. The song's catchy melody and meaningful lyrics make it a favorite among Passenger's fans.

@GlowingAprilSky

Officially 27 today and i had to come back to this track. My favorite artist ever since the teen years and most likely the only one where I don't have a single song that I don't absolutely love. Love how relatable his writing is and how consistant of a style he's always had. In the midst of feeling lost and with no idea of what to do, this song lifts me up (especially today). Thank you Passenger for sharing your immense talent with the world, and for making me feel better for a decade ❤️❤️

@felixguambe4894
