North
Paul Mounsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From the north came a warrior
Baring burdens dark and deep
I've a will and I've a wanting
And miles to go before I sleep

I have horses in my stable
I have sons fit to fight
I will bring this to your table
If you ride with me this night

From the north came a warrior
Baring burdens dark and deep
I've a will and I've a wanting
And miles to go before I sleep

Blood red wine, a toast for heroes
And harping till the morning light

Come the dawn the road will lead us
If you ride with me this night

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Paul Mounsey/Runrig's "From the North" are about a warrior from the north who comes bearing burdens and a strong will. The singer expresses a desire to join this warrior on his journey, as they have miles to go before they can rest. The warrior has horses and sons fit to fight, and promises to bring what he has to the table if the singer joins him for the night. They share a toast for heroes with blood red wine and harp until morning light. When dawn comes, the road will lead them to their destination.

The song's portrayal of the warrior from the north is reminiscent of Scottish folklore and myth, which highlight the strength and determination of Scottish warriors. The image of a burdened warrior also suggests that they are fighting for something important and have made personal sacrifices to do so. The desire of the singer to join the warrior and ride with him suggests a sense of camaraderie and the idea that they are united in their cause.

Interestingly, the song's mention of horses, sons, and wine also suggests an emphasis on tradition and lineage. The warrior comes from a long line of fighters and is passing on his legacy to his own sons, while also welcoming others into the fold to fight alongside them. The mention of blood red wine could also symbolize the idea of sacrificing oneself for a greater cause.

Overall, "From the North" is a powerful and evocative song that speaks to the strong traditions and mythology of the Scottish warrior. It highlights the strength of the human spirit in the face of great danger and sacrifice.

Love, love, love this music. When I first heard it, I thought it was an ancient Scottish lament, given the modern treatment. It is utterly beautiful, with or without the guitar.

I now know why this music speaks to me .... had one of those DNA analyses done, as a birthday pressie and I have a LOT of Scottish ancestry - (and Viking!!!) which absolutely delights me. I could not be more pleased.

@SaveFerrisLover

I’d been trying to find this, only capable of remembering the main violin part and the guitar and the word “North”, for years. There doesn’t seem to be anything that comes up if the only thing that is searched is “North”. I’m so glad I’ve been able to find it again after so long! Such an amazing piece.
