A native of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Vargas was a classically-trained tenor who originally sang opera but gained fame with his renditions of popular songs. He made many musical guest appearances in films from 1936 onward, but also had more substantial acting roles in a few pictures, achieving over 70 screen credits in total.
In 1942, Vargas performed at the White House for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, one of many honors he received during his long career. He also performed in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Vargas died in Mexico City, Mexico at age 83.

Pedro Vargas, tenor mexicano, no estaba emparentado con los mariachis Vargas. Pedro Vargas fue un cantante popular muy querido en México. Mencionado artísticamente como "el tenor continental" o "el samurai de la canción", convivió con cantantes como Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante o la argentina Libertad Lamarque. También protagonizó decenas de películas en la llamada época de oro del cine mexicano . Fue el primero en grabar la melodía " la última noche que pasé contigo" en 1946 del compositor cubano Bobby Collazo. Vivió entre 1906 y 1989 muriendo a los 83 años.
