Two Loves Have I
Perry Como Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two loves have I, and they tear me apart
Two loves have I, both are in my heart
One is a flower, and the other a flame
Two loves have I, but they're not the same...

When I'm in a gay mood, 'tis then my light love I crave
Then again at times my other love can make me a slave
I can't deny, that to both I am true
Two loves have I, both of them are you...

I can't deny, that to both I am true,
Two loves have I, both of them are you...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Perry Como's "Two Loves Have I" describe a situation where the singer's heart is torn between two loves. The two loves are described using vivid imagery of a flower and a flame. The flower represents a lighter, more carefree love that the singer craves when he is in a gay mood. The flame, on the other hand, represents a more powerful, intense love that has the ability to enslave the singer at times. Despite the differences between the two loves, the singer cannot deny that he is true to both and that both are one and the same person.

The song's lyrics are open to interpretation and can mean different things depending on the listener's perspective. Some may see it as a love triangle between three people, with the singer unable to choose between them. Others may see it as a depiction of the internal struggle between emotions, with the two loves representing different sides of the singer's personality.

Scotto/Murray produced this relaxed beautiful romantic ballad & who better to sing it, Perry Como, one of the best coroners on the planet. However, a slight quickening of the tempo would make his performance even better. His silky vocal cords as always produced as clear as a bell. Rest in peace great gentleman.

The song was recorded in 1947 and I noticed that in a lot of Perry Como's recording at the time he slowed the pace and extended the syllables of the lyrics of many of his songs. One thing about his phrasing is that he pronounced each syllable of the lyrics.
