It is not capitalism either.
If you track down where the money comes from, it is government support.
So, parties in power (across the world) set up funds with taxpayer money to "help woman in gaming" or "support for minority in geek culture".
To gain access to these funds, companies have to cater to groups like sweet baby ink.
And in return, they get financial support, lower loans and support of journalists.
And, as long as it does not ruin the IP, they did not see any reason to not do it.
Problem is, it does ruin the IP.
Nobody is interested in a new Star wars game, because they know the story will not be star wars.

But, this is not capitalism, this is government interference in the market "to create a better future" according to their ideology.

I feel that one of the weird things about diversity rhetoric is the way it treats diversity as simultaneously something inevitable and yet also something that requires force.

Like, she's saying that consumers can be acclimated to seeing diverse characters in games.

And like, I agree. Audiences don't necessarily have to recoil everytime an existing character is made black, or gay, or gender bent or what have you.

But these same people never hold true to that principle in reverse.

Because to them, making The Little Mermaid black isn't neutral because the race shouldn't matter. It's actively positive, because it means casting one more black actress in an industry that's white disproportionate to the general population.

And to these same people on the left, casting, say, Scarlett Johansen as a previously Asian character in Ghost in the Shell isn't neutral because it shouldn't matter what race she is, or because different creators should be allowed to take characters in different directions. It's negative, because that's one fewer Asian actress cast in an industry that's disproportionately white.

And that's the thing: I can get behind an initiative designed to try and determine what the barriers to entry are for minorities in Hollywood. I think 90% of the time it's class-related but even if it happens to be the case that the barriers to entry are a small handful of powerful straight white male producers or directors (don't know enough about the industry to say who holds the most power exactly) I'm even in favor of programs designed to diversify the industry.

My problem is that I don't believe EVERY SINGLE piece of media needs to be individually judged based on how socially responsible it's being, where "woke" casting always appears more responsible than less woke casting.

She really doesn't get it does she?

Her thinking gamers are picky babies just because they like what they have and forcing change on them is stupid.

I like to use the recipe argument. Food Recipes have improved over the years. They keep changing until you reach perfection. Once that perfect recipe has been achieved, it stops evolving because people like it.

If you change the recipe, ingredients, or cooking style, it is no longer good.

The same goes here. We, as gamers liked what we had. It was straight to the point and fun. We do not want political and gender identities thrust in our faces and told we're evil just because we're Caucasian. That instantly turns people off, especially people from outside America....not everyone is American, and nobody owns black slaves any more, and very few are racists.

Yet she thinks we are, even though we aren't, and thus treats us as "picky babies."

Well, I'm not a baby, I'm forty six, and I'm sick of this weird "woke" culture. It looks like a spiteful, arrogant excuse for attention if you ask me.

@bloody4558

Wokeness is ALWAYS wrong.
Here's what the people defending it don't get. No one is against the presence of minorities in a story. What we are against is inclusivity. Inclusivity is always bad because it's the wrong practice to obtain diversity.
The correct way to obtain diversity has nothing to do with how stories are written. But with what stories are being adapted.

Inclusivity is wrong because it's is treating the lack of diversity in stories as the main problem, when the reality is this. There are several diverse stories already in existence. The issue here is that those NEVER get adapted.
Inclusivity forces diversity on stories that rightfully lack it.
Not all stories can be diverse, and diversity is only as important as what it can bring to a story.

Final Fantasy 16 is a game that rightfully lacks diversity, because the story is self-contained to a region that doesn't have that many different people living in it. This makes it easier to get into more detail about the local cultures making characters more deep in the process.
When you shove diversity willy nilly into a story you force to author to create more back stories to explain why someone who shouldn't live in the region is in fact living there and how did they get permission to be there. Which is still ok if we're talking about one single character, but it's never about one character is it?

Sweet Baby Inc reminds me of Q5, the focus group who ruined kids cartoons in the 80s. Two of the shows they completely ruined were Pound Puppies and Real Ghostbusters.

Ironically, after ruining these shows and angering the fans and viewers, Q5 vanished into obscurity.

To this day, people are still very angry with Q5.

If you want to know what Q5 did to Real Ghostbusters, look up the vid "The Real Ghostbusters: The Bad episodes."  Apparently Q5 were called in to "fix" the show even though there was nothing wrong with the show. It was awesome, it had 100% ratings, everyone loved it, no problems at all, then after Q5 tampered with it, the ratings dropped and it fell apart.

My guess is that Q5 found nothing wrong with the show, so rather than say "looks great, keep it up", they decided to "find" something wrong that wasn't there.

Here's a companion post that fleshes out some talk about Alan Wake 2 and whale hunting: https://petercoffin.substack.com/p/sweet-baby-whales-and-alan-wake

@terminaldeity

The blatant infantilization is weird, right? Calling the company Sweet Baby and talking about 'picky babies' in the business plan, it's weird.

@timk6181

'Sweet baby' refers to the kind of gamer they want to cultivate right? It's deeply condescending and very weird.

@DiscipleOfHeavyMeta1

It's not just weird, it's straight up creepy and disgusting.

@Peter

It seems like that's the idea. Which is super fucked up.

@user-account-not-found

Sweet baby refers to a BBQ sauce you would know that if you left your mom's basement for a night. Hehehe

@spanglelime

@@user-account-not-found I don't think they consulted Ray. Ray would not be happy. (The buffalo wing sauce is fantastic too.)
The CEO wishes she was as awesome as the sauce company.

I can't wait until this phase of society is over. It's gonna end right??? 😳

@Peter

hope so

@ourochroma

It sure seems like it will.
Its own policies are self defeating and their integrity collapses with words
