The irony of Just Write’s critique is that it is a very narrow application of literary theory, which exists explicitly to illustrate how an art piece can be viewed through countless lenses, thereby placing a great deal of an art piece’s worth on the ability of the art enjoyer to derive meaning.

Put another way, the only posers and anti-intellectuals that exist are the very people who claim to be tastemakers and the smartest people in the room.

Man hell yes. I have spent the last few months talking about how these people calling everybody phonies and fakes and shit is just an expression of ideology, but I do agree, there are people who are legit fake as hell. And it's this kind of person, this supposed expert, telling you what's good and what's not.

A good take. I’d watched the Just Write video some time ago, and actually the general feeling I got was that the guy hated the divergence from Asimov and worked backwards to justify why it was a bad film.

As a college philosophy professor that starts each semester—regardless of what class I’m teaching: logic, ethics, or philosophy—with a clip I made from “I, Robot” (on my own YouTube channel) to demonstrate that truth is in asking the right/correct questions, NOT in having the right/correct answers (AND who has not only makes my students watch your wealth hoarders video as part of their course requirements when we get to Marx’s critique of capitalism, but also linked your videos to discussion boards when students ask why I despise Jordan Peterson), can I quote your take (and quote you) from this video going forward when I discuss this movie each semester? I LOVE that you break it down that the enemy is ideology. That tracks with the themes I make in all of my classes, AND makes for such a GREAT addition to start of the classes with your statement that the real enemy is the subjective interpretation of law and those with the power to enforce their interpretation.

I don't hate science, either. I don't buy the anti-intellectual line; skepticism is intellectual, especially when no one else is skeptical. And again, I think that while the aesthetic of "fear of AI," the movie is really talking about control.

You are definitely hitting on the idea of media influence. Tone, context, style, reception all fall into place when looking at media and how it reflects on society. I've been talking about this for years myself.

Why do people do what they do? Influence plays a part. Internal influence, to want to discover or external influence--> to want to take part in something along with others. Not the only motivations, but I think you get the idea

I always wondered if I,Robot was at all a reference to the red scare. Since it was set in Chicago, the robots are somewhat equivalent to immigrants, and they turn red when that whole attack starts. Btw, I love your styled silver hair, kind of jealous

I heard similar point why there are so many trashy anime.
Lot of Japanese authors and animators themselves are huge consumers of older anime since children so there is almost incestuous process in how same story is being replicated.
That's why there are hundreds of anime with boring Japanese guy going to European inspired fantasy world surrounded by a harem of fanservice-y women and usually total garbage and unwatchable unless you're an anime nerd

Few notes.. In general I'll agree that the movie IRobot is a fun film. But my opinion is it should not have been called Irobot. Because apart from the three rules it has absolutely nothing to do with the source material at all. maybe you should read the book IRobot. It would be like me making a movie that stared a hobbit, calling it lord of the rings, but then writing a film like willow.

What? The title of the film fits? No it doesn't it's got nothing (apart from the three laws) to do with the book(yes I know it's a complication of short shorties). It's cheap, its the film equivalent of click bait.. promises one thing and then delivered something else. Sure most people haven't read Asimov, and that sort of makes it worse, because they'll now assume that this film represents his work.. which it doesn't. It's just disrespectful.

Thank you for this video. That suggestion kept creeping around my feed and im glad to hear i already knew exactly what it was going to be... I've been railing against people claiming I, Robot (2004) is bad because "iT's nOt FaItHfUl tO aSiMoV" for years. It's such an amazing pro-humanity film. What i also got from my most recent viewing was that AI isnt really that because it's still created by humans, so whatever priority it's programmed for is what it will act upon. Hence why Sonny acts in the interest of humanity (in spite of also being an AI) whilst VIKI, made by the corporate entity, solves for profit and stasis.

Lot of great themes in there about the nature of power, law, ideology, humanity. I just knew that video would be some pretentious "intellectual" crapping all over it for being a "dumb action movie" and then he also adds in the derisive "AMERICAN action movie." These people really do suck. it's also funny how they actually usually have pretty terrible media literacy and are just making a presentation for the class thats like "here's why im scientifically right about my opinions." Big fat LOL @ him saying the film is "misogynist" and "anti-technology." Just sad. Now I wanna rewatch I, Robot.

Idk, I think it's pretty bad. The detective work and mystery is pretty lackluster, the ideas were pretty basic if you're even passingly into scifi, and the whole 'prophecy' angle was very stupid. Like it if you want, but I agree with the other guy, dumb movie.

Yeah man, I Robot is a decent movie. I probably wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it's a fun action movie with just enough depth to be engaging. I don't see the problem. People just being haters.

Honestly this makes me want to rewatch it even though I saw it a thousand times on Fox as a kid lmao
