Thank you for giving me a chance to talk about other subjects. After studying River, I see many parallels between him & Kurt Cobain. I now understand why Kurt Cobain, who was not known to mix it up with "Hollywood Types" made an exception for River. They were much alike & both used their celebrity to bring awareness to injustices they felt were unacceptable.

One thing that also stands out, is that by all accounts the kids, and especially River, bore the responsibilities of his parents. Financially and mentally, from a very young age. Gawd forbid what happened to the children in that disgusting cult.
Some pressure he must have been under. As a kid who also had to carry a lot of responsibilities at home (on a different level), I can imagine what it must have felt like.
His/their parents have a lot to answer for towards their kids and towards themselves. (Especially sensitive kids are usually fiercely loyal, especially with neglectful parents.)

That Children of God bunch were ridiculous, I was 17 and knew better. They’d work a corner in an entertainment district close to where I lived and go after runaways, mostly girls. The ringleader was “David” and his eyes were positively evil, he didn’t like my friend and me because we’d tell the kids to get away from that bunch. David threatened us in a very ungodly way for spoiling his prey. Kids would listen to us because we were their age. Poor River.

his parents got the whole family out of that cult, they were on the run, with no money. The cult tried to crush them and their parents had to flee with five kids and start from scratch. River probably felt he had to provide because he made the highest income. Their mother had a job and was raising the kids...their dad from what I understand had a drinking problem but they were trying their best

I recently went on a binge watch of cults and watched documentaries ones on Jonestown, Children of God, Manson family, The Family (Australia) and a couple others I don’t remember, but it’s sad how these people who were poor and suffering and wanted peace were manipulated into joining these cults and believed the leaders cared for them. In the case of The Family (Australia), rich people were manipulated into giving their children away to a woman and her husband and the woman abused and brainwashed the children. It’s very messed up. The fact that River’s father didn’t want to take care of his kids shows the kind of attitude some of the people who joined these cults had. Very sad. They’d drag their kids into the cult and some of the parents would neglect their kids once joining. I hate how his family covers up stuff. We know stuff was not the way it was supposed to be, don’t pretend it was different. Can’t wait to see what’s up next!

To put my 2 cents in on the Vietnam war...anytime you have to draft citizens and force them into a situation where they have to go to war or go to jail, that's a pretty good sign the war you're fighting is not just. When a war is worth fighting, the American patriots will flock to register and fight. The Vietnam War was a disgrace. I will always support the men who gave their lives, but I will never support a government that makes the decisions our government made in the 60s.

Thank you for covering this, I always read that River and his family were “hippies” involved in a cult but I didn’t realize it went this deep. You are correct about the dad putting his ideologies before his children! What a mess! Poor River had to be the breadwinner and essentially the grown up in the family! It’s so tragic I can’t even begin to rap my head around it. True that River and his siblings were robbed of a childhood!Rose McGowan has a similar upbringing in the Children of God which her family also escaped and it makes sense that she is so vocal regarding abuse.Thank you for your content!

River Phoenix didn't deserve to pass away the way he did on Halloween because it wasn't even his time. He was only 23 years young. Not old enough to leave earth. He had A bright future ahead of himself. Whoever spiked his drink or knocked him out on overdosing on a substance drug is unfair to take someone else's life for whatever ulterior motive. As someone who is a Christian (not so much religious as spiritual) it really bothers me at the amount of cults that branch off of the Christian religion. The fact that all those who are believers tend to get thrown into the same category by those who see from the outside looking in. But having said that, I can completely understand why and I can understand why others would not want to have anything to do with Christianity. There are extremists in every religion.. The problem with so called “Christians” is that there are too many who actually do not believe or practice what they preach. They do not bare the fruits. Their intent is only if selfishness and pure evil. Ive heard a few stories of survivors that grew up in this cult and it’s absolutely horrific what they had to endure. It most definitely goes against everything the Bible says. Especially the involvement of children.. Jesus even said for anyone who messes with his children to tie a weight around their necks and jump in the ocean. It is one of the greatest sins. When it comes to tithing (it’s pronounced Tie-th) many imposters tend to use this for their own favor. They also claim that it is something that is mandatory for the same reasons. Tithing NEVER involved sex though. Ever. But then again, like I said earlier, many of these cults completely go against the Bible. Not all Christians are judgmental, hypocritical, “holier than thou”, cultists. Technically, those who fall into these stereotypes and those who have no humble, selflessness to them, aren’t true believers to begin with.

Such an amazingly talented young man. This is not out of any disrespect this is just my true encounter with the beautiful soul. I want to say this in the right way so it doesn't come out wrong. Please forgive me if it does it is not my intention. I remember meeting him back stage at a Red Hot Chili Pepper concert at the Hollywood Palladium. I think it was around 1992 and it was a charity event that was hosted by Rosanne Barr. The Beastie Boys also performed. I was so excited, and he was so beautiful, you could tell he was very shy, very soft spoken and a very gentle soul. He definitely wasn't the wild party type, he kind of hid off to the side trying to not be noticed. I am sure he was only their to support the band, I think he was very good friends with them. I remember seeing so many interviews where River had said he never did drugs or drank alcohol. I will be clear I did not at anytime see him do any drugs and he was drinking out of a red solo cup which I do remember it being alcohol. This was a very long time ago, and I don't remember exactly why I thought this, it wasn't like his behavioral was extremely odd. I knew that the claims of him not doing drugs or drinking (the beer) was not the reality. He was definitely not sober. I remember this being a very strong feeling for me, and it has stayed in my mind all these years. That was a great night, I saw some of my favorite bands, it was fun and a once in a life time encounter. Meeting River Phoenix, would in any case be a highlight in anyone's life. The thing that stood out the most that night was, I felt very sad, I think because I felt I had found out something that about him that he obviously didn't want anyone to know. Like I invaded his privacy or I had just been told his deepest darkest secret. It was a very odd feeling. I don't judge anyone, I have had my own issues, so it wasn't like I felt let down being a fan and finding that out. I can't really explain it, I think I knew somewhere inside of me that, he would die of a drug over dose. I don't think I thought that exactly but I have never had an experience or encounter with someone, that felt so intensely. It was ikes a connection between us, It definitely wasn't that. It was overwhelming though and when he did pass the following year, I was not surprised by how at all. RIP River

When I was a kid you could find their comics on the streets of Seattle. I was astonished at the combination of sex and Jesus freak pamphlets. Learning later of their child sex abuse and sex trafficking practices, it's not surprising to say the least. Back in the seventies people didn't suspect that type of thing. That's one reason these cults were able to get away with that kind of stuff in ways that seem so easy to see through today.

It is this year in which artists Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace are as long dead as they had once lived. The tragic passing of River is even longer gone now and at an earlier age of his lifetime, still he is getting the love he rightfully deserves. I thought I knew all about him, but seeing so much insight into the Children of God really caught my interests again to dig deeper. Thank you for your work on this. People always mentioned the bright career which lay ahead of River (with starring roles in Titanic, etc.) but I guess if he didn't kick the drugs, no more Hollywood roles would've come in. Same with Edward Furlong, kind of. Maybe that could've been River's saving. Stop the work/drugs and live on a farm again.

River Phoenix was so beautiful. He had said that he had lost his virginity at age four in an interview during the cult. Any “religion” who puts children in a position who has their kids have sexual relations with anyone is not Christian and in fact is inhuman. I think his girlfriend of some years, Martha Plimpton was told a lot by River. She said they had thousands of conversations of how he didn’t know who he was . I found it odd that his parents were part of the hippie scene cause they seemed too old. Rivers dad was even previously married and had a daughter with his first wife.

The pressure to support a family's survival and sexual abuse never lay out a fantastic future for people. People say it makes you stronger or traumatized, it makes everyone both. It's just a matter of when they start returning the pain. And whether they turn it in on themselves or out on others. Maybe that's part of society's revulsion to addicts, subconsciously they recognize they're just self-practicing serial killers. Our society loves a parentified child seemingly self-sufficent, it eases the burden of egocentric adults. But nobody gets to skip grades in real life, you'll always have to repeat the time later in life and then the lessons are harder to learn.

Ok. I know this story. The Viper Room is a local establishment for me. I’m a fan of John Frusciante and this incident pushed him over the edge. The infamous videos of John high on H is hard to watch. I believe the recordings they made together finally found the light of day but for a long time he would not release em outta respect!

Hey Charles, did you see ScottOnTape’s shoutout to you in his video about Kurt Cobain’s urn in New York? He went to the house where at one time part of his ashes were located. I’m sure you know all about it but thought it was cool he mentioned you, bro!

Kurt's ashes are also all over California, where his junkie groupie wife kept accidentally spilling them, as she tripped around stoned out of her mind, carrying his remains along in a teddy bear backpack everywhere she went so that she could use them for attention. If she hadn't donated some of his remains (which I found super weird at the time, but am thankful for now) I doubt there'd be any left. I cannot believe that she is still alive and he is not

My dad went to military prison.. because he was the youngest of the family and was drafted. My uncle was older and had took his place.. so my dad was to be released after a bid at a federal prison. I asked my dad why he didn't make it to 1969 Woodstock he told me he was on the bus heading south while all the hippy busses were heading north. My uncle went to war and had lost his mind after losing his full platoon who were all murdered in their sleep. My uncle had woke up in the middle of the night left the tents and slept in a fox hole.. he woke up to silence. He went to look around and he found all his buddies. Now he was alone in the jungle.. sad. He made his way and I do not know the rest. Ma the American government had torchered him and he was broken. He stayed in the woods alone for at least 2 years nobody seen him. The only way my grandfather knew he was alive was my grand father would bring him a plate of food and that somehow grand father knew he was ok... Vietnam was hell for us.

You're right about Rose McGowan. Winona Ryder didn't grow up in a religious cult. She did live on a commune, but it wasn't that extreme. Her family still lived in their own house, and she went to public school. Her parents were into "hippie" culture, but they still had jobs. They published and curated books about Aldous Huxley and Timothy Leary. She still says she got into acting by choice. Her father even told her she could only act as long as she got straight As in school.
