I Want To Be Just Like You
Phillips Craig & Dean Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
He calls me Dad and I call him Bub
With his faded old pillow and a bear named Pooh
He snuggles up close and says, "I want to be like you"
I tuck him in bed and I kiss him goodnight
Trippin' over the toys as I turn out the light
And I whisper a prayer that someday he'll see
He's got a father in God 'cause he's seen Jesus in me
*chorus:
Lord, I want to be just like You
'Cause he wants to be just like me
I want to be a holy example
For his innocent eyes to see
Help me be a living Bible, Lord
That my little boy can read
I want to be just like You
'Cause he wants to be like me
*Got to admit I've got so far to go
Make so many mistakes and I'm sure that You know
Sometimes it seems no matter how hard I try
With all the pressures in life I just can't get it all right
But I'm trying so hard to learn from the best
Being patient and kind, filled with Your tenderness
'Cause I know that he'll learn from the things that he sees
And the Jesus he finds will be the Jesus in me
*chorus
*Right now from where he stands I may seem mighty tall
But it's only 'cause I'm learning from the best Father of them all
*Lord, I want to be just like You
'Cause he wants to be just like me
I want to be a holy example
For his innocent eyes to see
Help me be a living Bible, Lord
That my little boy can read
Lord I want to be just like You
'Cause he wants to be like me
*Lord I want to be just like you
cause he wants to be like meee ya
The song "I Want to Be Just Like You" by Phillips Craig & Dean is a heartfelt tribute to fatherhood and the desire to be a positive role model for one's children. In the first verse, the singer describes his son climbing into his lap for a goodnight hug and expressing the desire to be like him. The father reflects on the responsibility he feels to set a good example for his child, both in his role as a father and in his faith as a follower of Christ. He acknowledges that he is not perfect and makes mistakes, but he is striving to learn from God and become a better person.
The chorus expresses the father's desire to emulate God and be a holy example for his son. He wants to be a living Bible, so that his little boy can see the love of Jesus in him. The second verse continues the theme of learning from God and seeking to become more patient, kind, and loving in all aspects of life. The bridge emphasizes that being a good role model is not about being perfect or having all the answers, but about learning from the love of God and passing that love on to others.
In summary, "I Want to Be Just Like You" is a song about the challenges and joys of fatherhood, and the desire to be a positive influence on one's children. It is a reminder that being a good role model is not about perfection, but about striving to learn and grow in the love of God.

My momma played this song for me and my brother when we were kids. She was a single mother and our fathers are not in the picture, God blessed us so much with hr and we both aspire to be just like her because she is such a great woman of God. Praise God for the great single parents that still love the Lord and their children

So on my 11th or 12th birthday my father sang this song for me and my twin brother at church. At the time I was really embarrassed and felt awkward because my parents are separated and I didn't see my dad too often. I'm 16 now and living with my father and listening to this song again I realize what he meant by dedicating this song to us. I want to continue walking with God along with my father and brother, and He will definitely take care of us on our journey through life. God bless.

Divorce isn't always something you need to fear or be ashamed of. There are times God needs to call us out of a situation he doesn't want for us right now. We are a stiff necked lot of remarkable sinners and well, honestly, I have to tell you the truth. He has to go in after us and carry us out on a stretcher wounded, broken, but finally teachable. I want you to know that because I want you to be able to forgive yourself for having very human, fragile, adolescent feelings. it's okay not understanding. That's why God creates an environment where He can reach and bring us up in the way He wants us to go. You're a very capable, intelligent person. Just imagine all the great things that God has already prepared for you to have, a discerning spirit, a heart for your family, and a home the gates of hell cannot prevail against; all because your father knew in his heart it was time to embarrass his freckle faced kids in public 😇 That's what we do. That's why we're called parents. We scatter that seed on fertile ground so when you are old you won't depart from it. Have the greatest life ever!

I’m not even married, but this song reminds me of my beautiful friend Carie, who’s in my special needs class at dance. I want to be a Christlike example for her.
