I think people get confused because they can't separate the awesome way Denzel delivered these lines and the horrible context of the words he delivered. A Father should know his Son idolizes him and he shouldn't just like him but love him. My Father clothed and fed me but he also hugged me and told me he loved me. He was my best friend until the day he died. I remember we were playing a Little League baseball championship and my Father said he couldn't make it because he had to work. I was at bat and I saw my Father running to watch the game. I cried like a baby in front of the team and we won the game. I hope Father's know the most manly thing you can do is take care of your family and not just like but love your kids. I understand the story though. The way some men and women are raised makes it hard for them to show emotions to their kids.

It was the times he came from, back then black men believed in order for their sons to have a fighting chance they had to raise them hard, Denzel showed love in his tone and expression which made this even more powerful! Some parents show love with actions, they just don't have it in them and can't do the affectionate talk cause they probably didn't have it from their own parents (usually). Watched the live scene from 10 years ago. Watched this one. Doing it for stage requires you to emote so the back of the theater hears you. On screen you don't have to emote as much sound but the feeling is still there with just as much intensity as if you are on stage. The text is the same but Denzel murked this just as well as James Earle Jones before him. A master Craftsman

My dad was alot like this and I had a hell of a childhood dealing with him, but ill never forget when I got real sick years back and was literally on my death bed my dad held me with a panicked and helpless yet sincere loving voice telling me he loved me, and he couldn't lose me and that moment was the only reason I forgave him for all the years of him abusing me verbally and physically.
