Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

The lyrics of Plastic Tree's song ピアノブラック delve into themes of isolation, despair, and the longing for escape from a bleak reality. The song begins with the imagery of a frozen sleep and a darkened screen, symbolizing a state of inertia and stagnation. The lyrics suggest a sense of hopelessness as the cause of this darkness is unknown and the queen is perpetually absent, rendering spells ineffective and vows broken. The reference to a secret base being burned and reduced to ashes could signify the destruction of a once-safe haven or sanctuary, leaving nothing but remnants of what once was.
As the song progresses, the emergency bell rings and everyone scatters, overwhelmed by a sense of confusion and loneliness. The mention of shadows dancing in a dreamlike state speaks to a disorienting and surreal experience, where time feels cold and unyielding. The lyrics question whether it's possible to escape this cycle of despair, as feelings of melancholy and beauty intertwine, with a sense of longing that remains unfulfilled. The image of watching a withering bouquet of flowers mirrors the inevitability of decay and loss, contrasting with the recurring vision of a night resembling the eyes of a loved one.
The refrain of "ブラックアウト" underscores the theme of a blackout or a loss of consciousness, both literally and metaphorically. The inner world and inner space are depicted as places to avoid, perhaps suggesting inner turmoil or emotional distress that is too painful to confront. The plea to not extinguish the inner light further emphasizes a struggle against darkness and the fear of being engulfed by it. The falling piano outside the window and the wish for a world that crumbles hint at a desire for destruction and transformation, seeking solace in a shattered reality rather than the unrelenting darkness.
Ultimately, the lyrics evoke a sense of resignation and acceptance of the darkness within and around the self, while also yearning for a spark of light or hope amidst the overwhelming despair. The repeated plea to not extinguish the inner light serves as a poignant reminder of clinging to the flicker of hope and beauty in a world that seems consumed by darkness and decay. The song portrays a complex emotional landscape, depicting a search for meaning and connection in a world that feels fragmented and irreparably damaged, yet holding onto the possibility of renewal in the midst of chaos and destruction.

It's rumored that he drains the life of his drummers to stay young and that's why they keep changing them
